Abstract

A wireless communication device is configured to provide wireless communication to a host device when disposed in a mated position in a slot having a primary axis and formed in a side face of the host device. The wireless communication device includes a transceiver, a controller in communication with the transceiver, and a modem in communication with the controller. The wireless communication device also includes a balanced antenna in communication with the transceiver and having a polarization axis that is parallel to the side face and to the primary axis of the slot when the wireless communication device is in the mated position.

Claims

1. A wireless communication device configured to provide wireless communication to a host device when disposed in a mated position in a slot having a primary axis and formed in a side face of the host device, the wireless communication device comprising:

a transceiver;

a controller in communication with the transceiver;

a modem in communication with the controller; and

a balanced antenna in communication with the transceiver and having a polarization axis that is parallel to the side face and to the primary axis of the slot when the wireless communication device is in the mated position.

2. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the antenna is a center-fed dipole.

3. The wireless communication device of claim 2, further comprising a balun feed system through which the antenna is center-fed.

4. The wireless communication device of claim 2, further comprising a differential feed system through which the antenna is center-fed.

5. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the antenna is a notch antenna.

6. The wireless communication device of claim 5, wherein the antenna is fed across the notch thereof.

7. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the antenna is a slot antenna.

8. A wireless communication device configured to provide wireless communication to a host device when disposed in a mated position in a slot having a primary axis and formed in a side face of the host device, the wireless communication device comprising:

transceiver means;

controller means coupled to the transceiver means;

modem means coupled to the controller means; and

means for transmitting and receiving RF signals and exhibiting a polarization axis parallel to the side face and to the primary axis of the slot when the wireless communication device is in the mated position.

9. The wireless communication device of claim 8, wherein the means for transmitting and receiving RF signals is a center-fed dipole.

10. The wireless communication device of claim 9, further comprising a balun feed system through which the means for transmitting and receiving RF signals is center-fed.

11. The wireless communication device of claim 9, further comprising a differential feed system through which the means for transmitting and receiving RF signals is center-fed.

12. The wireless communication device of claim 8, wherein the means for transmitting and receiving RF signals is a notch antenna.

13. The wireless communication device of claim 12, wherein the means for transmitting and receiving RF signals is fed across the notch thereof.

14. The wireless communication device of claim 8, wherein the means for transmitting and receiving RF signals is a slot antenna.
