Abstract

An anchoring device for anchoring a medical lead implanted in a patient includes a substantially elongate, hollow, tubular, and elastically compressible body. The body has a longitudinal axis, a groove formed circumferentially about the body for receiving a suture and an inner bore forming a recessed portion. The anchoring device also has a surrounding portion adjacent the recessed portion, where the recessed portion has increased retention characteristics on a medical lead relative to the surrounding portion of the inner bore.

Claims

1. An anchoring device for anchoring a medical lead implanted in a patient, the anchoring device including a substantially elongate, hollow, tubular, and elastically compressible body, the body having a longitudinal axis, a groove formed circumferentially about the body for receiving a suture and an inner bore forming a recessed portion, and a surrounding portion adjacent the recessed portion, the recessed portion having an increased retention characteristic relative to the surrounding portion.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion is adapted to have increased retention characteristics on a polyurethane sheath of a medical lead.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion includes an uncoated silicone surface for interacting with the medical lead.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion is substantially smoother than the surrounding portion of the inner bore.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion defines a surface roughness of about 15 micro inches Ra or less.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion defines a surface area of at least about 10 square mm.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion has an arcuate shape when viewed in side profile perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the recessed portion includes a friction-enhancing coating.

9. A medical lead anchoring system comprising:

a medical lead including an outer sheath; and

an anchoring device having a substantially elongate, tubular, and compressible body, the anchoring device comprising;

an outer surface having a first groove formed therein; and

an inner bore sized to receive the medical lead and including a first portion, a second portion, and a first recessed portion extending longitudinally between the first and second portions, the first recessed portion being located at least partially under the first groove and having a greater stiction characteristic than the first and second portions.

The system of claim 9, wherein the outer surface of the anchoring device further has a second groove formed therein for receiving another suture and the inner bore further includes a third portion and a second recessed portion extending longitudinally between the second portion and the third portion, the second recessed portion being located at least partially under the second groove and having greater stiction characteristics than the second and third portions.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein the first recessed portion has a surface roughness that is substantially less than the first and second portions.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein the first recessed portion has a surface roughness 15 micro inches Ra or less.

13. The system of claim 9, wherein the first recessed portion includes a friction-enhancing coating.

14. The system of claim 9, wherein the anchoring device is formed of silicone.

15. The system of claim 9, wherein at least a portion of the inner bore of the anchoring device has a very smooth finish.

16. The system of claim 9, wherein the first recessed portion is formed with an ultra smooth finish.

17. The system of claim 9, wherein the first recessed portion is substantially circular in transverse cross-section and substantially arcuate in longitudinal cross section.

18. The system of claim 9, further comprising a fastener received in the first groove of the anchoring device and compressing the first recessed portion against the medical lead at a first interface, wherein a portion of the medical lead at the first interface is formed of at least one of polyurethane and silicone and a portion of the anchoring device at the first interface is formed of at least one of polyurethane and silicone.

19. A method of making an anchoring device for anchoring a medical lead implanted in a patient, the method comprising:

forming a substantially elongate, tubular, and compressible body defining an outer surface having a suture groove formed therein; and

forming an inner lumen in the compressible body including a recessed portion having an increased stiction characteristic.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the recessed portion is formed using a mandrel having a mirror finish portion corresponding to the recessed portion and a substantially rougher portion adjacent the mirror finish portion.
