SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR OPTIMIZING A BRAKING SCHEDULE OF A POWERED SYSTEM TRAVELING ALONG A ROUTE

1. An optimization system for a braking schedule of a powered system traveling along a route, said braking schedule is based on at least one predetermined characteristic of the powered system and is configured to be enacted in a braking region along said route, said optimization system comprising:
- a sensor configured to measure a parameter related to an operation of the powered system; and
a processor coupled to the sensor, to receive data of the parameter;
wherein said processor is configured to compare the measured parameter with an expected parameter, said expected parameter is based on said at least one predetermined characteristic of the powered system;
wherein said processor is configured to adjust the at least one predetermined characteristic based on the comparison; and
wherein said processor is configured to adjust the braking schedule based on the adjustment to the at least one predetermined characteristic.

Abstract
An optimization system is provided for a braking schedule of a powered system traveling along a route. The braking schedule is based on at least one predetermined characteristic of the powered system and is configured to be enacted in a braking region along the route. The optimization system includes a sensor configured to measure a parameter related to the operation of the powered system. Additionally, the system includes a processor coupled to the sensor, to receive parameter data. The processor compares the measured parameter with an expected parameter, which is based on the at least one predetermined characteristic of the powered system. The processor adjusts the at least one predetermined characteristic based on the comparison, and adjusts the braking schedule based on the adjustment to the at least one predetermined characteristic. A method is also provided for optimizing a braking schedule of a powered system traveling along a route.

22. A locomotive comprising:

a locomotive traction assembly comprising;
a chassis; and
a motoring system and a braking system attached to and supported by the chassis;a sensor attached to the traction assembly and configured to measure a parameter related to an operation of the motoring system and/or braking system; a processor coupled to the sensor, to receive data of the measured parameter; wherein the processor is configured to control the motoring system and/or the braking system to enact a braking schedule in a braking region along a route of the locomotive, said braking schedule is based on at least one predetermined characteristic of the powered system; wherein the processor is configured to compare the measured parameter with an expected parameter, said expected parameter is based on or otherwise relates to said at least one predetermined characteristic of the powered system; wherein the processor is configured to adjust the at least one predetermined characteristic based on the comparison; and wherein the processor is configured to adjust the braking schedule based on the adjustment of the at least one predetermined characteristic, said predetermined characteristic being one of a performance rating of the motoring system and/or braking system and/or a physical characteristic of the powered system.
