HIGHLY VENTILATED SOFFIT WITH OBSCURED VENTILATION OPENINGS
First Claim
1. A ventilating component for a building structure, comprising:
- a panel comprising a sheet material extending over a coverage area;
a channel formed in the sheet material, the channel opening as an elongated slot on one side of the panel and having spaced channel side walls and a channel bottom projecting at an opposite side of the panel,wherein the channel has at least one ventilation opening, the ventilation opening being concealed behind the slot from view from said one side of the panel.

Abstract
A ventilating component for a building, particularly a ventilating soffit, provides a high ratio of ventilation flow area to component coverage area. A sheet in a plane of coverage has a spaced-channel configuration, or alternatively a terraced configuration. Ventilation openings are placed in the connecting webs between the upper and lower levels, especially in sidewalls of elongated channels that open as slots on the exposed side of the soffit. These connecting webs are oriented at an acute angle relative to the coverage plane. In a channel arrangement the webs can be shaped to block direct view of the side walls. The acute angle precludes, or at least foreshortens, a view of the webs that contain the ventilation openings. The ventilation aspects are concealed while permitting a high ratio of flow area to coverage area.

14. A vented siding panel comprising:
-
a panel having at least one panel section and at least one longitudinal recess, a pair of channel walls connected to and extending away from the panel section on opposite sides of the recess; a pair of lower segment walls connected to and extending away from respective ones of the pair of channel walls, the lower segment walls having laterally extending distal ends; an upper segment wall having a width greater than a width of the longitudinal recess, with the lower segment walls located between the panel section and the upper segment wall; and a pair of connecting segments connecting the distal ends of the lower segment walls to ends of the upper segment wall, wherein a plurality of ventilation openings are located in at least one of the group consisting of one of the lower segment walls, one of the connecting segments, and the upper segment wall, such that all of the ventilation openings are hidden from view when the panel is viewed from a side of the panel section opposite the upper segment wall.

15. A structure comprising:
-
a building having one of the group consisting of a roof or eaves; and a vented siding panel mounted to a bottom of the roof or eaves, comprising; a panel having at least one panel section and at least one longitudinal recess, a pair of channel walls connected to and extending away from the panel section on opposite sides of the recess; a pair of lower segment walls connected to and extending away from respective ones of the pair of channel walls, the lower segment walls having laterally extending distal ends; an upper segment wall having a width greater than a width of the longitudinal recess, with the lower segment walls located between the panel section and the upper segment wall; and a pair of connecting segments connecting the distal ends of the lower segment walls to ends of the upper segment wall, wherein a plurality of ventilation openings are located in at least one of the group consisting of one of the lower segment walls, one of the connecting segments, and the upper segment wall, and wherein the vented siding panel is mounted to a bottom of the roof or eaves such that the ventilation openings are hidden from view when viewed from outside the building.
