Abstract

A surgical fastener applying apparatus including an anvil half-section having a distal end and a longitudinal axis; a cartridge receiving half-section having a distal end and operatively couplable with the anvil half-section such that the distal ends of the half-sections are in juxtaposed relation; and a deflection control system operatively engaged with and reinforcing the distal end of the anvil half-section when a force is applied to the distal end of the anvil half-section in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis.

Claims

1. A surgical fastener applying apparatus, comprising:

an anvil half-section defining a longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface, the anvil half-section including a distal end, a proximal end, and side walls having a height;

a cartridge receiving half-section including a distal end, the cartridge receiving half-section being operatively couplable with the anvil half-section such that the distal end of the anvil half-section is in juxtaposed relation to the distal end of the cartridge receiving half-section; and

a deflection control system operatively associated with the anvil half-section, wherein the deflection control system reinforces the distal end of the anvil half-section when a force is applied to the distal end of the anvil half-section in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis and normal to a plane defined by the tissue contacting surface of the anvil half-section, a proximal end of the deflection control system extending proximally to at least a pivot point for the anvil half-section and the cartridge receiving half-section, the deflection control system including at least one reinforcing member defining a height and being disposed in the distal end of the anvil half-section, the reinforcing member including a plurality of plates slidably disposed adjacent one another, wherein at least one of the plurality of plates defines a thickness that is different from a thickness of at least one other of the plurality of plates.

2. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of plates defines a thickness that is different from one another.

3. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of plates defines an axial dimension, wherein the axial dimension of at least one of the plurality of plates is different from the axial dimension of at least one other plate.

4. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein a proximal end of each plate extends proximally beyond the pivot point.

5. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein a proximal end of each plate is secured to the anvil half-section.

The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 1, wherein each plate defines a height dimension and a width dimension, wherein the width dimension is greater than the height dimension, and wherein the width dimension extends in a plane that is parallel to the plane defined by the tissue contacting surface of the anvil half-section.

7. A deflection control system incorporated into a surgical fastener applying apparatus, the deflection control system comprising:

at least one reinforcing member including a plurality of plates each slidably overlying one another, wherein each plate defines a thickness, and wherein the thickness of at least one of the plurality of plates is different from the thickness of at least one other plate.

8. The deflection control system of claim 7, wherein the deflection control system is associated with an operative end of the surgical fastener applying apparatus.

9. The deflection control system of claim 8, wherein the deflection control system is disposed within a tool assembly positioned at the operative end of the surgical fastener applying apparatus.

10. The deflection control system of claim 7, wherein each plate defines a height dimension and a width dimension, wherein the width dimension is greater than the height dimension, and wherein the width dimension extends in a plane that is parallel to a plane defined by a tissue contacting surface of the surgical fastener applying apparatus.

11. The deflection control system of claim 7, wherein each of the plurality of plates defines a thickness that is different from one another.

12. The deflection control system of claim 7, wherein each of the plurality of plates defines an axial dimension, wherein the axial dimension of at least one of the plurality of plates is different from the axial dimension of at least one other plate.

13. The deflection control system of claim 7, wherein the surgical fastener applying apparatus includes a jaw assembly defining a pivot point, and wherein a distal end of each plate extends distally beyond the pivot point of the jaw assembly and a proximal end of each plate extends proximally beyond the pivot point of the jaw assembly.

14. The deflection control system of claim 13, wherein the proximal end of each plate is secured to at least one jaw of the jaw assembly, and wherein the distal end of the plates slide relative to one another during application of a force on a distal end of said at least one jaw of the jaw assembly applied in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of said at least one jaw of the jaw assembly.
