Abstract
An access node for an Ethernet network is connected between an access point of user devices and a broadband remote access server for access to a plurality of service providing networks. It includes a VLAN handling unit having a memory for storing identifications of Ethernet frames transmitted in a first VLAN including the access node and a local virtual router function unit of the access server in a second VLANs. Each of the second VLANs including the access node, the local virtual router function unit and one of the virtual router function units of the access server for each of the virtual router function units. A control unit commands the handling unit to transmit frames from a new user device that has connected itself to the access point into the first virtual local area network. The control unit also receives information from the access server in respect of routing frames and its commands to the handling unit to transmit frames from user device which is connected to the access point and the frames from which are transmitted into the first VLAN to be instead transmitted into one of the second VLAN as given by the information received from the broadband remote access server, the frames thereby being transmitted to the server of the respective service providing network.

2. An access node in a broadband access network for selecting a service providing network from a plurality of service providing networks, said access node comprising:

5. A method in a broadband access network for selecting a service providing network from a plurality of service providing networks, said method comprising the steps of:

storing in a virtual local area network (VLAN) handling unit in an access node, Ethernet frames from a user device communicating with the access node; initially transmitting the Ethernet frames from the VLAN handling unit to a first VLAN, wherein the first VLAN includes the access node and a local virtual router function (VRF) of a broadband remote access server (BRAS); receiving routing instructions from the BRAS identifying a second VLAN, wherein the second VLAN includes the access node, the local VRF, and a VRF of the BRAS which transfers Ethernet frames to a broadband access server of one of the service providing networks; and transmitting the Ethernet frames from the VLAN handling unit to the second VLAN in response to the routing instructions. - View Dependent Claims (6)

7. A system in a broadband access network for selecting a service providing network from a plurality of service providing networks, said system comprising:

an access node; a broadband remote access server (BRAS) in communication with the access node; and a plurality of virtual local area networks (VLANs) in communication with the access node and the BRAS, wherein each VLAN interfaces with a different service providing network; wherein the access node includes; a virtual local area network (VLAN) handling unit for storing and transmitting Ethernet frames from a user device to the plurality of VLANs; and a control unit in communication with the VLAN handling unit, said control unit including means for directing the VLAN handling unit to transmit the Ethernet frames from the user device to one of the VLANs identified by the BRAS.
