1. An implantable medical device, comprising:

  • at least one reservoir that holds at least one therapeutic agent;

    a delivery mechanism configured to provide non-systemic delivery of the at least one therapeutic agent to a local area of an animal in a therapeutically-effective concentration;

    wherein the therapeutically-effective concentration is in excess of a concentration that would produce a toxic effect if administered systemically to the animal; and

    wherein the at least one therapeutic agent has a half-life of about 5 hours or less.
