Abstract

A method for broadcasting messages in a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes employing a paging channel to receive a broadcast event on a wireless device and utilizing the broadcast event to trigger a warning message on the device. For example, the broadcast event can be detected from a natural disaster such as a primary earthquake warning or tsunami.

Claims

1. A method for broadcasting messages in a wireless communication system, comprising:

employing a paging channel to receive a broadcast event on a wireless device; and

utilizing the broadcast event to trigger a warning message on the device.

2. The method of claim 1, the broadcast event is detected from a natural disaster.

3. The method of claim 2, the broadcast event is detected from a primary earthquake warning.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising utilizing the broadcast event to place the wireless device in listen mode to receive subsequent data regarding the event.

5. The method of claim 4, the subsequent data is broadcast via a cell broadcast service, a mobile television services digital video broadcast, or a mobile broadcast multimedia service.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a dedicated warning message of receiving the warning message as a transmission indicator on an existing paging message.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising employing a Mobile Country Code (MCC) and a Mobile Network Code (MNC) to activate the wireless device.

8. The method of claim 7, the MCC is 901 and the MNC is 08.

12. The communications apparatus of claim 5, further comprising a dedicated warning message or a transmission indicator on an existing paging message that are employed to activate a wireless device.

13. The communications apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a Mobile Country Code (MCC) and a Mobile Network Code (MNC) to activate the wireless device.

14. The communications apparatus of claim 13, the MCC is 901 and the MNC is 08.

9. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a memory that retains code for receiving a warning signal across a paging channel of a wireless mobile device, the warning signal employed to enable subsequent warning messages at the device; and

a processor that executes the code.

10. The communications apparatus of claim 9, the warning signal is triggered from earthquakes, tsunami events, fire warnings, hurricanes, tornados, an outbreak of disease, a volcanic eruption, or an impending war.

11. The communications apparatus of claim 9, the subsequent warning messages are broadcast via a cell broadcast service, a mobile television service, a digital video broadcast, or a mobile broadcast multimedia service.

15. The communications apparatus of claim 9, further comprising a vibration alarm or a sound alarm to alert a user on the wireless mobile device.

16. A communications apparatus, comprising:

means for responding to a paging event that is generated to a plurality of non-subscribing mobile devices;

means for enabling a channel for subsequent messages associated with the paging event; and

means for warning a user upon receiving the paging event.

17. A computer-readable product having stored thereon computer-executable code for:

receiving at least one paging channel event to activate a wireless mobile device that a public warning has occurred;

notifying a user of the public warning via an alarm; and

activating a subsequent channel to receive additional information related to the public warning.

18. The computer-readable product of claim 17, further comprising generating the public warning from a detected natural disaster.

19. The computer-readable product of claim 17, further comprising receiving the paging channel event in accordance with a mobile country code and a mobile network code.

20. The computer-readable product of claim 17, further comprising receiving the paging channel event via a dedicated message.

21. A processor that executes the following code:

responding to a paging channel event that has been generated from a detected public warning event;

alerting a user of the paging channel event via a sound or a vibration; and

receiving subsequent messages for the public warning event via a broadcast service.

22. A method for broadcasting messages in a wireless communication system, comprising:

employing a paging channel to generate a broadcast event to a plurality of wireless devices; and

utilizing the broadcast event to trigger subsequent warning messages to the devices.

23. The method of claim 22, the broadcast event is detected from a natural disaster.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising utilizing the broadcast event to place the wireless devices into listen mode.

25. The method of claim 24, the subsequent data is broadcast via a cell broadcast service, a mobile television service, a digital video broadcast, or a mobile broadcast multimedia service.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising generating a dedicated warning message or generating the warning message as a transmission indicator on an existing paging message.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising employing a Mobile Country Code (MCC) and a Mobile Network Code (MNC) to activate the wireless devices.

28. The method of claim 27, the MCC is 901 and the MNC is 08.

29. A communications apparatus, comprising:

a memory that retains code for generating a warning signal across a paging channel that is transmitted to a plurality of wireless mobile devices, the warning signal employed to enable subsequent warning messages at the devices; and

a processor that executes the code.

30. The communications apparatus of claim 29, the warning signal is triggered from earthquakes, tsunami events, fire warnings, hurricanes, tornados, an outbreak of disease, a volcanic eruption, or an impending war.

31. The communications apparatus of claim 29, the subsequent warning messages are broadcast via a cell broadcast service, a mobile television service, a digital video broadcast, or a mobile broadcast multimedia service.

32. A communications apparatus, comprising:

means for generating a paging event that is transmitted to a plurality of mobile devices;

means for generating subsequent messages associated with the paging event; and

means for warning a user upon communicating the paging event.

33. A computer-readable product having stored thereon computer-executable code for:

generating at least one paging channel event to notify a wireless mobile device that a public warning has occurred;

notifying a user of the public warning via an alarm; and

generating subsequent messages to provide additional information related to the public warning.

34. A processor that executes the following code:

generating a paging channel event that has been generated from a detected public warning event;

alerting a user of the paging channel event via a sound or a vibration; and

generating subsequent messages for the public warning event via a broadcast service.
