1. A system configured to measure at least one analyte in a host, the system comprising:
- a catheter comprising a first portion configured for insertion into a host and a second portion configured to remain outside the host after insertion of the first portion; and
at least one analyte sensor located within the second portion of the catheter, such that the at least one analyte sensor is exposed to a biological sample when the biological sample is drawn back into the catheter to a distance of about 40 mm or less, when the catheter is in fluid communication with a circulatory system of the host.
