Abstract

Methods and apparatuses to identify user terminals in providing connections for real time communications. In one embodiment, a method implemented on a connection server includes: establishing a first connection with a first terminal over a communication network for real time communications; in response to the first connection, assigning a first communication reference to uniquely identify the first terminal among a plurality of terminals on the communication network; establishing a second connection with a second terminal for real time communications; bridging the first and second connections to connect the first and second terminals for real time communications; and identifying the first terminal to a user of the second terminal using the first communication reference.

Claims

1. A method implemented on a connection server, the method comprising:

establishing a first connection with a first terminal over a communication network for real time communications;

in response to the first connection, assigning a first communication reference to uniquely identify the first terminal among a plurality of terminals on the communication network;

establishing a second connection with a second terminal for real time communications;

bridging the first and second connections to connect the first and second terminals for real time communications; and

identifying the first terminal to a user of the second terminal using the first communication reference.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

randomly generating the first communication reference in response to the first connection.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether the first terminal has been previously connected by the connection server to the user of the second terminal; and

in response to a determination that the first terminal has been previously connected by the connection server to the user of the second terminal, selecting a communication reference previously assigned to the first terminal as the first communication reference.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication reference is usable on the communication network to request the communication connection with a connection server.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication reference is not usable to call for a connection over the communication network during a connection between the first and second terminals.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the first communication reference is in a format same as a communication reference to call for a connection over the communication network.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether the first terminal has been previously connected by the connection server to the user of the second terminal; and

in response to a determination that the first terminal has been previously connected by the connection server to the user of the second terminal, selecting the first communication reference different from one or more references previously assigned to the first terminal.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first communication reference comprises a telephonic reference;

and the first and second connections are bridged to connect the first and second terminals for telephonic communications.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the telephonic reference comprises a telephone number, a session initiation protocol (SIP) uniform resource identifier (URI), a user identifier of an instant messaging network, or a voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) user identifier.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

charging the user of the second terminal according to a price specified by the user in response bridging of the first and second connections to connect the first and second terminals for real time communications.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the identifying of the first terminal to the user of the second terminal comprises presenting a call detail record (CDR) of the bridging of the first and second connections to identify calling party using the first communication reference.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein the identifying of the first terminal to the user of the second terminal comprises providing the first communication reference in calling line identification information provided to the second terminal in the establishing of the second connection.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

determining whether transmission of calling line identification information is blocked in the first connection with the first terminal;

wherein in response to a determination that transmission of calling line identification information is blocked in the first connection with the first terminal, the first communication reference is provided in calling line identification information in the establishing of the second connection with the second terminal.

14. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

assigning a second communication reference to uniquely identify the second terminal among a plurality of terminals on the communication network; and

identifying the second terminal to a user of the first terminal using the second communication reference.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

charging the user of the first terminal according to a price specified by the user of the second terminal and a duration of the bridging of the first and second connections to connect the first and second terminals for real time communications, the price being specified by the user of the second terminal for a service rendered by the user of the second terminal over a connection provided via the bridging of the first and second connections.

The method of claim 15, wherein the identifying of the first terminal to the user of the second terminal comprises presenting to the user of the second device a call detail record (CDR) of the bridging of the first and second connections to identify calling party using the first communication reference;

and the identifying of the second terminal to the user of the first terminal comprises presenting a call detail record (CDR) of the bridging of the first and second connections to identify called party using the second communication reference.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the assigning of the second communication reference is in response to the first connection.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the identifying of the second terminal to the user of the first terminal using the second communication reference comprises providing the second communication reference in called line identification information for the first connection.

19. A machine readable media embodying instructions, the instructions causing a machine to perform a method, the method comprising:

establishing a first connection with a first terminal over a communication network for real time communications;

in response to the first connection, assigning a first communication reference to uniquely identify the first terminal among a plurality of terminals on the communication network;

establishing a second connection with a second terminal for real time communications;

bridging the first and second connections to connect the first and second terminals for real time communications; and

identifying the first terminal to a user of the second terminal using the first communication reference.

20. A system, comprising:

means for establishing a first connection with a first terminal over a communication network for real time communications;

means for assigning a first communication reference to uniquely identify the first terminal among a plurality of terminals on the communication network, in response to the first connection;

means for establishing a second connection with a second terminal for real time communications;

means for bridging the first and second connections to connect the first and second terminals for real time communications; and

means for identifying the first terminal to a user of the second terminal using the first communication reference.
