Abstract

A method of managing a domain, a method of extending a domain, and a method of selecting a reference point controller are provided. The method of operating the domain includes: receiving a request for authenticating a reference point controller from a reference point controller candidate; invalidating a membership of the stored reference point controller; generating a unique reference point controller membership for verifying that the reference point controller candidate is a new reference point controller; and transmitting the generated reference point controller membership to the reference point controller candidate. Accordingly, even when an error occurs in the reference point controller, the function of the reference point controller can be rapidly replaced by using the reference point controller candidate.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

transmitting, among devices associated with a domain, data describing a capability of each device;

performing an election competition based on comparing, among the devices, the capability of each device with each other; and

designating one of the devices as a controller for the domain based on performing the election competition.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein performing the election competition comprises:

receiving, at a first device, data describing a capability of a second device;

comparing, using the received data, a capability of the first device with the capability of the second device;

broadcasting data describing the capability of the first device to a third device if the capability of the first device is greater than the capability of the second device; and

pausing for a predetermined amount of time if the capability of the first device is less than or equal to the capability of the second device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein designating the one of the devices as the controller for the domain further comprises electing the one device based on the one device having a highest capability among the devices.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising transmitting, to the elected device, a message indicating that the elected device is elected as the controller for the domain.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein designating the one of the devices as the controller for the domain further comprises electing the one device based on the one device winning the performed election competition.

6. A device comprising:

an interface configured to transmit, among devices associated with a domain, data describing a capability of each device; and

a processor configured to;

perform an election competition based on comparing, among the devices, the capability of each device with each other, and

designate one of the devices as a controller for the domain based on performing the election competition.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein performing the election competition comprises:

receiving, at a first device, data describing a capability of a second device;

comparing, using the received data, a capability of the first device with the capability of the second device;

broadcasting data describing the capability of the first device to a third device if the capability of the first device is greater than the capability of the second device; and

pausing for a predetermined amount of time if the capability of the first device is less than or equal to the capability of the second device.

8. The device of claim 6, wherein designating the one of the devices as the controller for the domain further comprises electing the one device based on the one device having a highest capability among the devices.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the interface is further configured to transmit, to the elected device, a message indicating that the elected device is elected as the controller for the domain.

10. The device of claim 6, wherein designating the one of the devices as the controller for the domain further comprises electing the one device based on the one device winning the performed election competition.

11. A system comprising:

one or more computers;

a computer-readable medium coupled to the one or more computers having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the one or more computers, causes the one or more computers to perform operations comprising;

transmitting, among devices associated with a domain, data describing a capability of each device,

performing an election competition based on comparing, among the devices, the capability of each device with each other, and

designating one of the devices as a controller for the domain based on performing the election competition.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein performing the election competition comprises:

receiving, at a first device, data describing a capability of a second device;

comparing, using the received data, a capability of the first device with the capability of the second device;

broadcasting data describing the capability of the first device to a third device if the capability of the first device is greater than the capability of the second device; and

pausing for a predetermined amount of time if the capability of the first device is less than or equal to the capability of the second device.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein designating the one of the devices as the controller for the domain further comprises electing the one device based on the one device having a highest capability among the devices.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the operations further comprise transmitting, to the elected device, a message indicating that the elected device is elected as the controller for the domain.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein designating the one of the devices as the controller for the domain further comprises electing the one device based on the one device winning the performed election competition.
