Abstract

A system includes a lift chair having sensors embedded therein to determine various factors such as the amount of pressure exerted in various portions of the chair, the activity level of the chair user, whether the chair is occupied and which user is currently occupying the chair, and how much assistance the chair provides the user. The information detected by the sensors can be transmitted via the Internet, for example, to a third party device, such as a doctor'"'"'s personal computer, which is also hooked up to the internet and is capable of receiving periodic updates to monitor use of the chair or modify the rules that govern the use of the chair. The user can override the pre-set rules for use of the chair by using an override button on a user control device.

Claims

32. A lift chair comprising:

a plurality of sensors in the lift chair;

a controller configured to control operation of the lift chair; and

a storage device configured to store information detected from the sensors,

wherein the lift chair is configured to stimulate user movement of a user.

33. The lift chair of claim 32, wherein stimulating user movement comprises altering an angle of recline of the lift chair periodically or forcing standing of the user for a certain amount of time.

34. The lift chair of claim 33, wherein altering the angle of recline periodically or forcing standing of the user for a certain amount of time encourages exercise and/or increases circulation of the user.

35. The lift chair of claim 33, wherein the lift chair is programmed to notify the user when the lift chair begins altering the angle or forcing standing.

36. The lift chair of claim 32, further comprising a feedback device and an override button.

37. The lift chair of claim 32, wherein the lift chair is programmed not to start stimulating user movement if the sensors detect that the user is sleeping.

38. The lift chair of claim 32, wherein the plurality of sensors are adapted to determine which of a plurality of previously registered users is occupying the lift chair based on information detected from the sensors.

39. The lift chair of claim 36, further comprising a user control device adapted to control operation of the lift chair based on a set of assistance rules stored by the controller, and the override button is configured to stop an activity of the lift chair.

40. A system comprising:

a lift chair;

a plurality of sensors in the lift chair;

a controller configured to control operation of the lift chair based on a set of assistance rules stored by the controller; and

a communication device configured to communicate information from the plurality of sensors to a remote device,

wherein the lift chair is configured to stimulate user movement of a user.

41. The system of claim 40, wherein the communication device is a two-way communication device.

42. The system of claim 40, wherein the remote device is capable of transmitting assistance rules to the controller via the communication device.

43. The system of claim 40, wherein the plurality of sensors includes at least one of activity and presence sensors, pressure sensors and angle sensors.

44. The system of claim 40, further comprising a user control device adapted to control operation of the lift chair, wherein the user control device includes an override button configured to override the assistance rules.

45. The system of claim 40, further comprising a notification device attached to the lift chair, wherein the notification device is configured to receive information from the controller regarding operation of the lift chair and to relay the information to the user of the lift chair.

46. A method comprising:

providing a lift chair comprising a plurality of sensors, a controller, and a communications device; and

stimulating a movement of a user to encourage exercise with the lift chair.

47. The method of claim 46, wherein the stimulating a movement comprises altering the angle of recline periodically or forcing standing of the user for a certain amount of time.

48. The method of claim 46, wherein the exercise increases circulation of the user.

49. The method of claim 47, further comprising notifying the user when the lift chair begins altering the angle or forcing standing.

50. The method of claim 46, further comprising detecting if the user is sleeping.

51. The method of claim 50, further comprising not stimulating the user if the user is sleeping.

52. The method of claim 49, further comprising stopping the lift chair with an override button.

53. The method of claim 46, further comprising determining which of a plurality of previously registered users is occupying the lift chair based on information detected from the sensors.

54. The method of claim 53, further comprising controlling how much assistance the lift chair should provide to said each of the plurality of previously registered user.

55. The method of claim 46, further comprising transmitting assistance rules to govern operation of the lift chair to the communication device of the lift chair from a remote device.

56. The method of claim 55, wherein the assistance rules are transmitted via the Internet.

57. The method of claim 46, further comprising determining an activity level of the user of the lift chair.

58. The method of claim 46, further comprising transmitting information from the lift chair to a health care provider.
