Abstract

Improved apparatus and methods for monitoring, diagnosing and treating at least one medical respiratory condition of a patient are provided, including a medical data input interface adapted to provide at least one medical parameter relating at least to the respiration of the patient, and a medical parameter interpretation functionality (104, 110) adapted to receive the at least one medical parameter relating at least to the respiration (102) of the patient and to provide at least one output indication (112) relating to a degree of severity of at least one medical condition indicated by the at least one medical parameter.

Claims

1. A system for providing output related to at least one medical condition of a patient, the system comprising:

a first sensing unit adapted to provide a first signal indicative of a first medical parameter;

a second sensing unit adapted to provide a second signal indicative of a second medical parameter; and

a processing unit adapted to provide an output indication related to at least one medical condition of the patient, based at least on the first medical parameter and the second medical parameter.

2. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of sensing units.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a respiratory related parameter.

4. The system according to claim 1, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a carbon dioxide (CO₂) related parameter.

5. The system according to claim 4, wherein the CO₂ related parameter comprises a CO₂ waveform related parameter, an expired air CO₂ concentration, respiratory rate or any combination thereof.

6. The system according to claim 5, wherein the CO₂ waveform related parameter comprises ETCO₂, changes in ETCO₂, a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, a change in a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, time to rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, an angle of rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, breath to breath correlation, CAP-FEV1, CAP-FEV1/FVC ratio or any combination thereof.

7. The system according to claim 1, wherein the second medical parameter comprises a breathing related parameter, a heart function related parameter, a neurological parameter, a systemic perfusion related parameter, a visual parameter, FEV1, FVC or any combination thereof.

8. The system according to claim 7, wherein the heart function related parameter comprises blood pressure, NI blood pressure, systolic to diastolic ratio, a related parameter or any combination thereof.

9. The system according to claim 7, wherein the breathing related parameter comprises a respiratory rate.

10. The system according to claim 7, wherein the neurological parameter comprises an electroencephalogram (EEG) related parameter.

11. The system according to claim 1, wherein the processing unit is further adapted to compute a change in the first medical parameter, in the second medical parameter, in the output indication or in any combination thereof.

12. The system according to claim 11, further comprising a medical treatment control functionality for controlling the provision of at least one treatment to the patient in response to a change in one or more output indications.

13. The system according to claim 11, further comprising a medical treatment control functionality for controlling the provision of at least one treatment to the patient in response to a change in the relationship between one or more output indications.

14. The system according to claim 1, further comprising monitoring the first medical parameter, the second medical parameter, the one or more output indications or any combination thereof.

15. A display device adapted to

receive a first signal indicative of a first medical parameter;

receive a second signal indicative of a second medical parameter; and

display an output indication related to at least one medical condition of the patient, based at least on the first medical parameter and the second medical parameter.

16. The display device according to claim 15, further receiving a plurality of medical parameters.

17. The display device according to claim 15, further comprising a processing unit adapted to provide the output indication related to the at least one medical condition of the patient.

18. The display device according to claim 15, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a respiratory related parameter.

19. The display device according to claim 18, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a CO₂ waveform related parameter, an expired air CO₂ concentration, a respiratory rate or any combination thereof.

20. The display device according to claim 19, wherein the CO₂ waveform related parameter comprises ETCO₂, changes in ETCO₂, a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, a change in a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, time to rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, an angle of rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, breath to breath correlation, CAP-FEV1, CAP-FEV1/FVC ratio or any combination thereof.

21. The display device according to claim 15, wherein the second medical parameter comprises a breathing related parameter, a heart function related parameter, a neurological parameter, a systemic perfusion related parameter, a visual parameter, FEV1, FVC or any combination thereof.

22. The display device according to claim 21, wherein the heart function related parameter comprises blood pressure, NI blood pressure, a systolic to diastolic ratio, a related parameter or any combination thereof.

23. The display device according to claim 21, wherein the breathing related parameter comprises a respiratory rate.

24. The display device according to claim 21, wherein the neurological parameter comprises an electroencephalogram (EEG) related parameter.

25. The display device according to claim 17, wherein the processing unit is further adapted to compute a change in the first medical parameter, in the second medical parameter, in the output indication or in any combination thereof.

26. A method for providing output related to at least one medical condition of a patient, the method comprising:

obtaining a first medical parameter;

obtaining a second medical parameter; and

computing an output indication related to at least one medical condition of the patient, based at least on the first medical parameter and the second medical parameter.

27. The method according to claim 26, further comprising obtaining a plurality of medical parameters.

28. The method according to claim 26, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a respiratory related parameter.

29. The method according to claim 26, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a carbon dioxide (CO₂) related parameter.

30. The method according to claim 29, wherein the CO₂ related parameter comprises a CO₂ waveform related parameter, an expired air CO₂ concentration, a respiratory rate or any combination thereof.

31. The method according to claim 30, wherein the CO₂ waveform related parameter comprises ETCO₂, changes in ETCO₂, a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, a change in a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, time to rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, an angle of rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, breath to breath correlation, CAP-FEV1, CAP-FEV1/FVC ratio or any combination thereof.

32. The method according to claim 26, wherein the second medical parameter comprises a breathing related parameter, a heart function related parameter, a neurological parameter, a systemic perfusion related parameter, a visual parameter, FEV1, FVC or any combination thereof.

33. The method according to claim 32, wherein the heart function related parameter comprises blood pressure, NI blood pressure, a systolic to diastolic ratio, a related parameter or any combination thereof.

34. The method according to claim 32, wherein the breathing related parameter comprises a respiratory rate.

35. The method according to claim 32, wherein the neurological parameter comprises an electroencephalogram (EEG) related parameter.

36. The method according to claim 26, further comprising computing a change in the first medical parameter, in the second medical parameter, in the output indication or in any combination thereof.

37. The method according to claim 36, further comprising controlling the provision of at least one treatment to the patient in response to a change in one or more output indications.

38. The method according to claim 36, further comprising controlling the provision of at least one treatment to the patient in response to a change in the relationship between one or more output indications.

39. The method according to claim 36, further comprising monitoring the first medical parameter, the second medical parameter, the one or more output indications or any combination thereof.

40. A method of treating a patient, the method comprising;

obtaining a first signal indicative of a first medical parameter;

obtaining a second signal indicative of a second medical parameter;

providing an output indication related to at least one medical condition of the patient, based at least on the first medical parameter and the second medical parameter; and

treating a patient based on the output indication.

41. The method according to claim 40, further comprising obtaining a plurality of medical parameters.

42. The method according to claim 40, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a respiratory related parameter.

43. The method according to claim 40, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a carbon dioxide (CO₂) related parameter.

44. The method according to claim 40, wherein the first medical parameter comprises a CO₂ waveform related parameter, an expired air CO₂ concentration, a respiratory rate or any combination thereof.

45. The method according to claim 44, wherein the CO₂ waveform related parameter comprises ETCO₂, changes in ETCO₂, a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, a change in a slope of the increase in the CO₂ concentration, time to rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, an angle of rise to a predetermined percentage of a maximum value of CO₂ concentration, breath to breath correlation, CAP-FEV1, CAP-FEV1/FVC ratio or any combination thereof.

46. The method according to claim 40, wherein the second medical parameter comprises a breathing related parameter, a heart function related parameter, a neurological parameter, a systemic perfusion related parameter, a visual parameter, FEV1, FVC or any combination thereof.

47. The method according to claim 46, wherein the heart function related parameter comprises blood pressure, NI blood pressure, a systolic to diastolic ratio, a related parameter or any combination thereof.

48. The method according to claim 46, wherein the breathing related parameter comprises a respiratory rate.

49. The method according to claim 46, wherein the neurological parameter comprises an electroencephalogram (EEG) related parameter.

50. The method according to claim 40, further comprising computing a change in the first medical parameter, in the second medical parameter, in the output indication or in any combination thereof.

51. The method according to claim 50, further comprising controlling the provision of at least one treatment to the patient in response to a change in one or more output indications.

52. The method according to claim 50, further comprising prising controlling the provision of at least one treatment to the patient in response to a change in the relationship between one or more output indications.

53. The method according to claim 40, further comprising monitoring the first medical parameter, the second medical parameter, the one or more output indications or any combination thereof.

54. A system employing a plurality of parameters relating at least to respiration of a patient for providing a plurality of indications relating to at least one medical condition, the system comprising:

a medical data input interface providing the plurality of medical parameters regarding a patient;

a medical parameter interpretation functionality receiving the plurality of medical parameters regarding the patient and providing the plurality of output indications; and

a medical treatment control functionality for controlling the provision of at least one treatment to a patient in response to changes in the relationship between the output indications.
