Abstract

An anchor device and system for coupling soft tissue to osseous tissue includes a stopper member that supports a loop of suture material. A fixing member includes features that allow it to be rigidly coupled to surrounding bone and thus hold the stopper member in a cavity within the bone. The loop of suture material, in turn, supports a second suture device, which is coupled to, and thus retains, the soft tissue. In certain embodiments, the stopper member includes a mechanical linkage for coupling it to the fixing member, and surface features that resist withdrawal of the fixing member from the bone.

Claims

1. An anchor comprising:

a stopper portion, said stopper portion including a proximal surface, a first internal surface and a second internal surface, said first and second internal surfaces defining respective first and second bores through said stopper portion substantially perpendicular to said proximal surface, said first and second bores being adapted to receive first and second portions of a length of suture therewithin; and

a fixing portion, said fixing portion having a surface adapted to be disposed adjacent to a surface of said stopper portion so as to inhibit a motion of said stopper portion within a tissue matrix, said stopper portion including a third longitudinal bore, said third longitudinal bore being adapted to receive a further portion of said length of suture therewithin.

2. An anchor as defined in claim 1 wherein said first and second internal surfaces comprise substantially cylindrical internal surfaces.

3. An anchor as defined in claim 1 wherein said first and second internal surfaces comprise substantially circular cylindrical internal surfaces.

4. An anchor as defined in claim 1 wherein said fixing portion includes a generally cylindrical external surface, said generally cylindrical external service including at least one detent feature.

5. An anchor as defined in claim 4 wherein said at least one detent feature includes a generally helical thread portion, said generally helical portion being interrupted by at least one longitudinal groove.

6. An anchor as defined in claim 5 wherein said generally helical portion spans a range of no more than about 355 degrees about a longitudinal axis of said fixing portion.

7. An anchor as defined in claim 4 wherein said at least one detent feature includes a generally circular barb portion.

8. An anchor as defined in claim 4 wherein said at least one detent feature includes a generally circular barb portion, said generally circular barb portion being interrupted by at least one longitudinal groove.

9. An anchor as defined in claim 1 wherein said fixing portion includes a generally conical external surface, said generally cylindrical external service including at least one detent feature.

10. An anchor as defined in claim 9 wherein said at least one detent feature includes a generally helical thread portion, said generally helical portion being interrupted by at least one longitudinal groove.

11. An anchor as defined in claim 9 wherein said at least one detent feature includes a generally circular barb portion.

12. An anchor as defined in claim 9 wherein said at least one detent feature includes a generally circular barb portion, said generally circular barb portion being interrupted by at least one longitudinal groove.

13. An anchor as defined in claim 1 wherein said further portion of said length of suture includes a 180°

bend.

14. An anchor as defined in claim 1 wherein said further portion of said length of suture is contiguous between said first bore said second bore.

15. An anchor comprising:

a fixing portion having a longitudinal bore therethrough; and

a stopper portion, said stopper portion having a first proximal portion and a second distal portion, said first proximal portion being adapted to be disposed substantially entirely within a region of said longitudinal bore, said second distal portion being adapted to be disposed outwardly of said longitudinal bore, said stopper portion being adapted to support a bent length of suture material within said longitudinal bore.

16. An anchor as defined in claim 15 wherein said fixing portion has an external surface, said external surface including at least one generally helical retaining feature, said at least one generally helical retaining feature being disposed about a longitudinal axis of said fixing portion.

17. An anchor as defined in claim 16 wherein said at least one generally helical retaining feature traverses last than 360 degrees about said longitudinal axis of said fixing portion.

18. An anchor as defined in claim 15 wherein said fixing portion has an external surface, said external surface including at least one generally circular retaining feature, said at least one generally circular retaining feature being disposed about a longitudinal axis of said fixing portion and in a plane substantially normal to said longitudinal axis.

19. An anchor as defined in claim 18 wherein said at least one generally circular retaining feature traverses last than 360 degrees about said longitudinal axis of said fixing portion.

20. An anchor as defined in claim 15 wherein said stopper comprises a first longitudinal bore and a second longitudinal bore, said stopper being adapted to be coupled to a length of suture having a first suture portion disposed within said first longitudinal bore, a second suture portion disposed within said second longitudinal bore, and a bent suture portion disposed between said first and second suture portions.
