Abstract

An energy harvesting mechanism creates electrical energy from in vivo physiological motion, transforming low frequency, physiological excitation into high frequencies for producing electricity and harvesting energy using an energy collector is deformed from variation of physiologic forces or motion with an input displacement, then captured, and then released to allow the energy collector to move with an output displacement being either faster or has a higher frequency, or both, when compared to the input displacement.

Claims

1. An energy harvester implantable in an animal comprising:

a biocompatible and deformable cavity that deforms under physiologic force or motion;

a solid coupling between the cavity and a collector for accepting energy from the input force or motion; and

a converter for transforming the motion of the energy collector into electric energy.

2. The energy harvester of claim 1, wherein the energy harvester includes a linear spring

3. The energy harvester of claim 1, wherein the energy harvester includes an elastic membrane.

4. The energy harvester of claim 1 where the energy converter includes a piezoelectric material.

5. The energy harvester of claim 1 where the energy converter employs magnetic induction.

6. An energy harvester implantable in an animal at least partially contained within a deformable cavity that uses physiologic motion to produce electric power based on a receiver for receiving an input force or displacement and displacing an energy collector to a catch position according to the input force;

said energy collector having an inherent release speed and an inherent release frequency;

a holder for temporarily holding said energy collector in said catch position and releasing said energy collector from said catch position, so that said energy collector moves with an output displacement in which the speed, frequency, or both is greater than the corresponding input displacement speed, frequency, or both, that output displacement speed or frequency change, or both, being governed primarily by said collector'"'"'s inherent release speed and frequency, and a converter for transforming the motion of the energy collector into electric energy.

7. The energy harvester of claim 6 where the cavity and receiver are coupled using a mechanical or solid connection.

8. The energy harvester of claim 6 where the cavity and receiver are coupled using a fluid force or displacement transfer medium.

9. The energy harvester of claim 6 further comprising:

said energy collector having an end that is displaced to store energy within the collector;

said holder releasing the energy collector from the catch position, so that said same end of the energy collector moves with an output displacement speed, frequency, or both, that is greater than the input displacement speed, frequency or both;

a converter for transforming the motion of said end of the energy collector into electric energy.

10. The energy harvester of claim 6, wherein the energy collector includes a linear spring.

11. The energy harvester of claim 6 where the energy converter includes a piezoelectric material.

12. The energy harvester of claim 6 where the energy converter employs magnetic induction.

20. The energy harvester of claim 6 where the cavity and receiver are coupled using a connection, wherein said connection comprises one of a mechanical connection, a solid connection, a fluid force connection or displacement transfer connection.

13. An energy harvester implantable in an animal comprising:

a biocompatible and deformable cavity that deforms under physiologic force or motion;

a fluid coupling between the cavity and a collector for accepting energy from the input force or motion; and

a converter for transforming the motion of the energy collector into electric energy.

14. The energy harvester according to claim 13 wherein the cavity and receiver are coupled using a mechanical or solid connection.

15. The energy harvester according to claim 13 wherein the cavity and receiver are coupled using a fluid force or displacement transfer medium.

16. The energy harvester according to claim 13 wherein said energy collector having an end that is displaced to store energy within the collector;

said holder releasing the energy collector from the catch position, so that said same end of the energy collector moves with an output displacement speed, frequency, or both, that is greater than the input displacement speed, frequency or both;

a converter for transforming the motion of said end of the energy collector into electric energy.

17. The energy harvester according to claim 13 wherein the energy collector includes a linear spring.

18. The energy harvester according to claim 13 wherein where the energy converter includes a piezoelectric material.

19. The energy harvester according to claim 13 wherein where the energy converter employs magnetic induction.
