Abstract

A liquid crystal display apparatus of the present invention includes: a liquid crystal cell including a pair of substrates provided with a color filter on one substrate, and a liquid crystal layer as a display medium arranged between the substrates; and an optical compensation element including at least an optical compensation layer. The substrate provided with the color filter has a haze value of more than 10%, and the optical compensation element is arranged on the opposite side against the color filter with respect to the liquid crystal layer.

Claims

1. A liquid crystal display apparatus comprising:

a liquid crystal cell including a pair of substrates provided with a color filter on one substrate, and a liquid crystal layer as a display medium arranged between the substrates; and

an optical compensation element including at least an optical compensation layer,

wherein the substrate provided with the color filter has a haze value of more than 10%, and the optical compensation element is arranged on the opposite side against the color filter with respect to the liquid crystal layer.

2. A liquid crystal display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the color filter is arranged on a viewer side and the optical compensation element is arranged on a backlight side.

3. A liquid crystal display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal cell employs one of a VA mode and an OCB mode.

4. A liquid crystal display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the optical compensation layer is formed from a non-liquid crystalline material.

5. A liquid crystal display apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the non-liquid crystalline material comprises at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of polyimide, polyamide, polyester, polyetherketone, polyamideimide, and polyesterimide.

6. A liquid crystal display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the optical compensation layer has a refractive index profile of nx>
