Abstract

In accordance with the present invention, a method for determining an orientation of a drug vial in an automated drug preparation system that includes a number of stations includes the steps of: (a) identifying the drug vial using identification information that is associated with the drug vial; (b) obtaining a photoimage of identified drug vial; and (c) comparing the photoimage with a reference image that corresponds to the identified drug vial to determine whether the orientation of the drug vial.

Claims

1. A method for determining an orientation of a drug vial in an automated drug preparation system that includes a number of stations comprising the steps of:

identifying the drug vial using identification information that is associated with the drug vial;

obtaining a photoimage of identified drug vial; and

comparing the photoimage with a reference image that corresponds to the identified drug vial to determine whether the orientation of the drug vial.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of identifying the drug vial comprises the step of reading a bar code on the drug vial to identify the drug vial.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of identifying the drug vial comprises the step of reading a marker that is associated with the drug vial.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of obtaining the photoimage comprise the step of using a camera to take the photoimage of the drug vial.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the reference image comprises a photoimage of the drug vial in an upright position.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein each drug dosage has its own associated reference drug vial.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of comparing the photoimage with the reference image comprises the steps of laying the photoimage over the reference image and determining whether a fit between the photoimage and the reference image is within a prescribed acceptable value.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining the fit comprises comparing at least one of a location and size of the neck of the drug vial in the photoimage compared to the neck of the drug vial in the reference image.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of determining the fit comprises comparing a diameter of the drug vial in the photoimage with a diameter of the drug vial in the reference image.

10. The method of claim 1, further including the step of entering drug identifying information in to a drug formulary when a new drug is entered into the system, the drug identifying information includes the reference image.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein each dosage amount for each drug has its own reference image.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein if the drug vial that is identified is not the drug vial that is expected at an identifying station where the drug vial is identified, then the drug vial is removed from the identifying station and from the system without the photoimage being taken of the drug vial.

13. The method of claim 12, further including the step of preventing the drug vial from being advanced to another station that includes a device for taking the photoimage.

14. A drug vial detection system at a detection station for determining an orientation of a drug vial in an automated drug preparation system comprising:

a first detector for reading a first vial identifier associated with the drug vial for identifying the drug vial;

a second detector in the form of an imaging device that is configured to take a photoimage of the identified drug vial;

a database for storing reference images of drug vials that can be used in the drug preparation system; and

a processor that compares the photoimage of the identified drug vial at the detection station with a corresponding reference image of the identified drug vial to determine an orientation of the identified drug vial.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the first detector reads a bar code that is disposed on the drug vial.

16. The system of claim 14, wherein the second detector comprises a CCD camera.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein each differently sized and different type drug vial has a unique reference image.

18. The system of claim 14, wherein the processor overlays the photoimage of the drug vial over the reference image and determines whether a fit therebetween is within a prescribed acceptable value.
