Abstract

An electronic bookmark can be used to render an advertisement at a bookmark insertion point (e.g., a stopping point) determined by a user when reading an electronic media document, such as an electronic book, newspaper, magazine, audiobook, and video, among others. Some of the variations provided herein include providing notice to an outside source providing the advertisement when user interaction with the bookmark occurs, as well as selecting advertisements based upon one or more criteria, including criteria related to the electronic media document and demographic information of the user.

Claims

1. A method of rendering an ad at a bookmark insertion point of an electronic media document, the method comprising:

detecting the bookmark insertion point in the electronic media document; and

rendering the ad within an electronic bookmark representation at the bookmark insertion point in the electronic media document.

2. The method of claim 1, the bookmark insertion point comprising a stopping point in the electronic media document.

3. The method of claim 1, the ad stored in an ad memory.

4. The method of claim 3, comprising:

receiving the ad from an outside source, and inserting the ad into an ad memory.

5. The method of claim 4, the outside source comprising at least one of a bookstore, a publisher, an author, a software manufacturer, and a manufacturer of an electronic media document reading device.

6. The method of claim 4, the ad selected based on at least one of a criterion related to the electronic media document, a criterion related to content of the electronic media document at the bookmark insertion point, and a reader descriptor stored demographic.

7. The method of claim 1, the rendering comprising rendering an ad transition.

8. The method of claim 1, the rendering comprising rendering the ad for a predetermined amount of time.

9. The method of claim 1, the bookmark rendered in at least one of a portrait mode and a landscape mode.

10. The method of claim 5, comprising:

notifying the outside source of the instance of the rendered ad upon the rendering of the ad.

11. The method of claim 1, comprising:

providing additional information relating to the ad upon user interaction with the ad within the bookmark.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein upon user interaction with the bookmark, dismissing the bookmark.

13. The method of claim 12, the dismissing comprising at least one of closing the bookmark, opening the rendered ad, and fading out the bookmark.

14. The method of claim 1, the ad comprising at least one of a text ad, a video ad, an audio ad, a graphic ad, an audiovisual ad, an audio recording, and a website link.

15. The method of claim 1, the electronic media document comprising at least one of a magazine, a newspaper, a periodical, a report, a paper, a brochure, a catalog, a manual, an audiobook, a movie, a musical recording, and a video.

16. A system for rendering an advertisement within an electronic media document, the system comprising:

an electronic media document memory component;

an electronic media document rendering component; and

an ad memory component coupled to an ad rendering component configured to render an ad within a bookmark representation at a bookmark insertion point in the electronic media document.

17. The system of claim 16, the insertion point comprising a stopping point in the electronic media document.

18. The system of claim 16, the ad comprising at least one of a text ad, a video ad, an audio ad, a graphic ad, an audiovisual ad, an audio recording, and a website link.

19. The system of claim 16, comprising at least one user descriptor component operably coupled to an ad memory.

20. A computer-readable medium comprising processor-executable instructions configured to implement a method of rendering an ad at a bookmark insertion point of an electronic media document, the method comprising:

detecting the bookmark insertion point in the electronic media document; and

rendering the ad within an electronic bookmark representation at the bookmark insertion point in the electronic media document.
