1. A method of uplink timing reference signal transmission in a user equipment comprising:
- receiving an uplink timing reference signal transmission instruction message;
determining a time interval to send a timing reference signal transmission in accordance with the timing reference signal transmission instruction message;
evaluating if uplink data is to be sent in the time interval; and
if there is data to be sent, sending the data in the time interval, wherein the timing reference signal transmission is not sent in the time interval, else sending the timing reference signal transmission in the time interval.

Abstract
A system and method are disclosed for providing uplink timing synchronization in a wireless communication system. The uplink timing synchronization may be provided via a specific message sent from the user equipment to a network access device, or may be calculated based upon data received at the network access device from the user equipment.
