1. A method of preparing at least one valence-converted catalyst comprising:

  • (a) heating a catalyst comprising chromium within a continuous catalyst activator comprising a fluidized bed while maintaining a catalyst flow through the continuous catalyst activator so the catalyst is maintained at a hold temperature for an average hold time;

    (b) contacting the catalyst with at least one agent to convert at least a portion of the chromium from Cr(III) to Cr(VI) to produce a valence-converted catalyst; and

    (c) recycling a filtered portion of the valence-converted catalyst back to an upstream location in the continuous catalyst activator so that essentially no normally detectable amount of catalyst is lost overhead.
