A method of diagnosing, monitoring or determining the likelihood of a renal disorder in a human being, wherein said method discriminates between a renal disorder and another condition that does not affect the kidney, said method comprising the steps ofi) determining the concentration of human neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in a sample of bodily fluid from the human being,ii) comparing said concentration with a predetermined cutoff value, said cutoff value being chosen to exclude lower concentrations of NGAL associated with conditions that do not affect the kidney, wherein a concentration above the cutoff value is indicative of a renal disorder.
