Abstract

A method for using a secondary PAN is disclosed. The method includes providing a secondary PAN associated with a primary PAN, where the secondary PAN has at least one end portion that is the same as the primary PAN, but has a middle portion of that is different than the primary PAN.

26. A method comprising:

providing a secondary PAN associated with a primary PAN, wherein the secondary PAN has a location identification data element, and wherein the location identification data element is the same as in the primary PAN, and at least the middle portion of the secondary PAN is different than the primary PAN; and

receiving approval or disapproval for a payment transaction after providing the secondary PAN.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein the location identification data element is a BIN.

29. The method of claim 26 wherein middle portion of the secondary PAN comprises a modified version of the middle portion of the primary PAN.

30. The method of claim 29 further comprising encrypting the primary PAN.

31. The method of claim 30 further comprising storing the encrypted primary PAN somewhere other than where it is originally stored.

32. The method of claim 31 further comprising sending the encrypted primary PAN and the secondary PAN with an authorization request.

33. The method of claim 26 wherein the middle portion of the secondary PAN comprises at least three digits that are the same.

34. The method of claim 33 wherein the middle portion of the secondary PAN further comprises a check sum digit.

35. The method of claim 26 wherein the primary PAN and the secondary PAN both have 13, 16 or 19 digits.

36. The method of claim 26 further comprising encrypting at least a portion of the secondary PAN.

37. The method of claim 36 wherein the encrypted secondary PAN is generated dynamically.

28. A computer readable medium comprising:

code for providing a secondary PAN associated with a primary PAN, wherein the secondary PAN has a location identification data element, and wherein the location identification data element is the same as in the primary PAN, and at least the middle portion of the secondary PAN is different than the primary PAN; and

code for receiving approval or disapproval for a payment transaction after providing the secondary PAN.

38. The computer readable medium of claim 28 wherein the location identification data element is a BIN.

39. The computer readable medium of claim 28 wherein middle portion of the primary PAN is changed to create the middle portion of the primary PAN.

40. The computer readable medium of claim 28 further comprising code for encrypting the primary PAN.

41. The computer readable medium of claim 28 further comprising code for encrypting at least a portion of the secondary PAN.

42. The computer readable medium of claim 41 further wherein in the code for encrypting at least a portion of the secondary PAN generates the encrypted secondary PAN dynamically.

43. The computer readable medium of claim 28 wherein the middle portion of the secondary PAN comprises at least three digits that are the same.

44. The computer readable medium of claim 43 wherein the middle portion of the secondary PAN further comprises a check sum digit.

45. The computer readable medium of claim 28 wherein the primary PAN is generally known to an authentic consumer, but the secondary PAN is not known to the authentic consumer.

28-1. A computer readable medium comprising:

providing a secondary PAN associated with a primary PAN, wherein the secondary PAN has a location identification data element, and wherein the location identification element is the same as in the primary PAN, and at least the middle portion of the secondary PAN is different than the primary PAN; and

receiving approval or disapproval for a payment transaction after providing the secondary PAN.
