Abstract

System and Methods determine a linguistic preference between two or more phrases. Each of the phrases is submitted to at least one search engine as a search string. Search results are retrieved from each of the at least one search engine for each submitted search string and total hit values of each search result are compared. One of the two or more phrases associated with the greatest total hit value are displayed to a user as the preferred phrase.

Claims

1. A method for determining a linguistic preference between two or more phrases, comprising:

submitting each of the phrases as a search string to at least one search engine;

receiving search results from each of the at least one search engine for each submitted search string;

comparing total hit values of each search result; and

displaying, to a user, one of the phrases associated with a greatest total hit value as a preferred phrase.

2. The method of claim 1, the step of submitting comprising supplying one or more linguistic categories to the at least one search engine such that a search performed by the at least one search engine is restricted to the one or more linguistic categories.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the one or more linguistic categories are selected from the group including literary works, technical works, news articles, and general.

4. The method of claim 1, the steps of submitting and receiving comprising communicating with the at least one search engine via the Internet.

5. The method of claim 1, the steps of submitting and receiving comprising communicating with the at least one search engine via an Intranet.

6. The method of claim 1, the steps of submitting and receiving comprising communicating with the at least one search engine via a local area network.

7. The method of claim 1, the step of displaying comprising displaying, to the user, two or more of the phrases where a difference between the total hit values of the two or more phrases is less than a predefined percentage.

8. The method of claim 1, the step of comparing being performed by the at least one search engine.

9. A software product comprising instructions, stored on computer-readable media, wherein the instructions, when executed by a computer, perform steps for utilizing a search engine to determining a linguistic preference between two or more phrases, comprising:

instructions for submitting each of the phrases as a search string to the search engine;

instructions for receiving search results from the search engine for each search string;

instructions for comparing a total number of hits for each search string;

instructions for selecting one of the phrases having a largest number of associated hits as a preferred phrase.

10. The software product of claim 9 forming part of a word processor.

11. A method for providing linguistic assistance to complete a phrase, comprising:

submitting a partial phrase as a search string to at least one search engine;

receiving, from each of the at least one search engine, a search result containing a plurality of context strings that match the search string;

analyzing the plurality of context strings of each search result to identify one or more phrases to complete the partial phrase.

12. A system for comparing two or more phrases to determine a preferred one of the phrases, comprising:

a linguistic analysis tool for retrieving search results from at least one search engine for each of the phrases, the linguistic analysis tool evaluating the search results to determine the preferred one of the phrases; and

a linguistic interface for identifying the phrases, the linguistic interface communicating with the linguistic analysis tool and identifying the preferred one of the phrases to a user.

13. The system of claim 12, the linguistic interface operating within a word processor.

14. The system of claim 13, the linguistic interface automatically identifying the phrases during operation of the word processor.

15. The system of claim 13, the linguistic analysis tool operating within the word processor.

16. The system of claim 12, the linguistic interface operating within a personal computer.

17. The system of claim 12, the linguistic analysis tool operating within a personal computer.

18. The system of claim 12, the linguistic analysis tool operating within the at least one search engine.

19. The system of claim 12, the linguistic analysis tool limiting a scope of a search by the at least one search engine based upon a category selected within the linguistic interface.

20. The system of claim 19, the category being preconfigured within the linguistic interface.

21. A system for providing linguistic assistance in completing a phrase, comprising:

a linguistic analysis tool for retrieving search results from at least one search engine for the phrase, the linguistic analysis tool processing the search results to determine one or more follow-on phrases; and

a linguistic interface for identifying the phrase, the linguistic interface communicating with the linguistic analysis tool and displaying the one or more follow-on phrases for the phrase.

22. The system of claim 21, the linguistic interface operating within a word processor.

23. The system of claim 22, the linguistic interface automatically identifying the phrase during operation of the word processor.

24. The system of claim 22, the linguistic analysis tool operating within the word processor.

25. The system of claim 21, the linguistic interface operating within a personal computer.

26. The system of claim 21, the linguistic analysis tool operating within a personal computer.

27. The system of claim 21, the linguistic analysis tool operating within the at least one search engine.

28. The system of claim 21, the linguistic analysis tool limiting a scope of a search by the at least one search engine based upon a category selected within the linguistic interface.

29. The system of claim 28, the category being preconfigured within the linguistic interface.
