Abstract

In one embodiment the method includes allocating, for a mobile, forward link resources for transmitting data over a shared forward link data channel without allocating reverse link resources for reverse link data transmission in association with the allocated forward link resources. At least a portion of the received data is repeatedly sent to the mobile on the shared forward link data channel over a time division multiple access air interface using the allocated forward link resources until an acknowledgement is received from the mobile or a number of transmissions have taken place.

Claims

1. A method of wireless data transmission, comprising:

receiving first data for transmission to a first mobile;

allocating, for the first mobile, forward link resources for transmitting data over a shared forward link data channel without allocating reverse link resources for reverse link data transmission in association with the allocated forward link resources; and

repeatedly sending at least a portion of the received first data to the first mobile on the shared forward link data channel over a time division multiple access air interface using the allocated forward link resources until an acknowledgement is received from the first mobile or a number of transmissions have taken place.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the allocating includes selecting an identifier from a plurality of identifiers reserved for only the shared forward link data channel.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the plurality of identifiers are medium access control indices.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

sending the selected identifier to the first mobile over a forward link control channel prior to sending the received first data; and

wherein

the sending the received first data sends the selected identifier in association with the received first data.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the sending the selected identifier sends a data rate with the selected identifier, the data rate indicating a data rate at which the first data will be sent to the first mobile.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

sending a remove assignment message to the first mobile removing assignment of the selected identifier to the first mobile.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving the acknowledgement or non-acknowledgement from the first mobile over a shared reverse link acknowledgment channel associated with the shared forward link data channel, the received acknowledgement or non-acknowledgement having been sent at a set timing relative to receipt of the sent first data.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving second data for transmission to a second mobile;

allocating, for the second mobile, forward link resources for transmitting data over the shared forward link data channel without allocating reverse link resources for reverse link data transmission in association with the allocated forward link resources for the second mobile; and

sending the received second data to the second mobile over the shared forward link data channel using the allocated forward link resources for the second mobile.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending a data alert message to the first mobile over a forward link control channel, the data alert message indicating that data for transmission to the first mobile exists; and

receiving an acknowledgement of the data alert message from the first mobile; and

wherein

the allocating is performed in response to the acknowledgement of the data alert message.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

receiving information from the mobile regarding the air interface with the acknowledgement of the data alert message; and

sending a data rate to the mobile prior to repeatedly sending at least a portion of the first data, the data rate having been determined based on the received information.

11. A method of wireless data transmission, comprising:

receiving a data alert message on a reverse link access channel indicating a mobile has data for transmission;

allocating, in response to the received data alert message, reverse link resources for receiving data over a shared reverse link data channel without allocating forward link resources for forward link data transmission in association with the allocated reverse link resources;

repeatedly receiving at least a portion of the data on the reverse link data channel based on the allocated reverse link resources until the data is successfully decoded; and

sending an acknowledgement of the received data on a forward link channel if the received data is successfully decoded.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the allocating comprises:

selecting an identifier from a plurality of identifiers reserved for only the shared reverse link data channel; and

sending an assignment message including the selected identifier to the mobile over a forward link control channel prior to the receiving the data.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the receiving the data derives a scrambling code based on the selected identifier, and receives the data on the reverse link data channel using the derived scrambling code.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the plurality of identifiers are medium access control indices.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the sending an acknowledgement sends the acknowledgement over a forward link medium access control channel.

16. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

removing assignment of the selected identifier by failing to send a continuation message with the sent acknowledgement.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

sending power control commands with the sent acknowledgement.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein a timing of when the assignment message is sent establishes when the mobile will send the data.

19. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

broadcasting available identifiers from a plurality of identifiers reserved for only the shared reverse link data channel; and

wherein

the data alert message includes a selected one of the available identifiers.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

sending an acknowledgement of the data alert message to the mobile, a timing of when the acknowledgment is sent establishing when the mobile will send the data.

21. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

sending a remove assignment message over a forward control channel, the remove assignment message removing assignment of the received identifier.
