Abstract

A method and device for QoS control for presence servers and a presence system supporting QoS control. The method for providing QoS capability for a presence server includes the steps of: receiving SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) messages; classifying said SIP messages based on a QoS policy; and delivering the classified SIP messages after a predetermined time corresponding to the QoS policy.

Claims

1. A method for providing Quality of Service (QoS) control capability for a presence server, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages;

classifying said SIP messages based on a QoS policy to produce classified SIP messages; and

delivering said classified SIP messages after a predetermined time corresponding to said QoS policy.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said classifying step comprises adding said SIP messages into a queue corresponding to said QoS policy;

and said delivering step comprises fetching said SIP messages from said queue.

3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

associating said SIP messages with corresponding Siplets according to the destination address of said SIP messages.

4. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

checking current system workloads to produce a check result; and

abandoning said SIP messages or putting said SIP messages into a corresponding queue in response to said check result.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said messages are selected from the group consisting of:

messages departing from said presence server; and

messages arriving at said presence servers.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

merging multiple SIP messages with the same destination address into one SIP message according to the attributes of said SIP messages and said QoS policies.

7. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

responding to a timing signal provided by a timer management unit; and

fetching said SIP messages from said queue.

8. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

fetching said SIP messages from said queue after a predetermined time interval.

9. A device for providing Quality Of Service (QoS) control capability for a presence server, comprising:

a QoS policy enforcement unit for fetching and providing a QoS policy related to received Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages;

a SIP message classifier for classifying said received SIP messages according to said QoS policy provided by said QoS policy enforcement unit to produce classified SIP messages; and

a SIP message delivery unit for delivering said classified SIP messages after a predetermined time period corresponding to said QoS policy.

10. The device according to claim 9, wherein said SIP message delivery unit comprises:

a bidirectional SIP message queue for storing said classified SIP messages to delay them by a period of time corresponding to said QoS policy; and

a SIP message dispatcher for delivering SIP messages waiting in said bidirectional SIP message queue.

11. The device according to claim 9, further comprising:

a message-Siplet relationship unit for associating said SIP messages with a corresponding Siplet according to the destination address of said SIP messages.

12. The device according to claim 10, further comprising:

a workload sensing unit for checking current system workload and providing a check result to said SIP message classifier and/or said SIP message dispatcher.

13. The device according to claim 12, wherein said SIP message classifier abandons said SIP messages or puts them into a corresponding queue, depending on said check result from said workload sensing unit.

14. The device according to claim 12, wherein:

said SIP classifier puts said SIP messages into a queue corresponding to said QoS policies; and

said SIP message dispatcher fetches said SIP messages from said queue and delivers them.

15. The device according to claim 14, wherein said messages are messages departing from said presence server or messages arriving at said presence server.

16. The device according to claim 14, wherein said SIP message dispatcher fetches said SIP messages from said queue at a predetermined time interval.

17. The device according to claim 10, further comprising:

a timer management unit for providing timing signals for said SIP message dispatcher, wherein said SIP message dispatcher delivers said SIP messages in response to said timing signals.

18. The device according to claim 10, wherein said SIP message dispatcher merges multiple SIP messages with same destination addresses into one SIP message according to the attributes of said SIP messages and said QoS policies.

19. A presence system for supporting Quality of Service (QoS) control, the system comprising:

a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application or application entity for providing a service program to be used by users;

a Siplet container entity for providing services for said SIP application or presence application entity, wherein said Siplet container entity is implemented for (i) receiving SIP messages;

(ii) classifying said SIP messages based on a QoS policy to produce classified SIP messages; and

(iii) delivering said classified SIP messages after a predetermined time corresponding to said QoS policy; and

a SIP stack entity for implementing SIP protocols in order to provide services for said Siplet container entity.
