Abstract

A method of forming and resulting nano-structured composite includes atomizing a mixture of an amount of each of aminopropyltriethoxysilane, AgNO₃, DI water, and ethanol in a carrier gas; heating the atomized droplets at a selected temperature for a time sufficient to reduce the Ag to its elemental form in a silica matrix; and outputting the nano structured composite particles. A predetermined heating time is from about 0.01 to about 40 seconds and a selected heating temperature is from about 200 to about 800° C. The nano structured composite includes a plurality of nano particles at a contact surface of the composite, dispersed throughout and at a contact surface of the composite, or dispersed throughout the composite.

Claims

1. A method of forming a nano structured composite comprising:

atomizing a mixture of an amount of each of aminosilane, AgNO₃, DI water, and alcohol in a carrier gas;

heating the atomized droplets at a selected temperature for a time sufficient to reduce the Ag salt by alcohol to its elemental form in a silica matrix; and

outputting the nano structured composite particles.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a predetermined heating time is from about 0.01 to about 40 seconds.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a selected heating temperature is from about 200 to about 800°

C.

4. The method of claim 1, further providing silver in an amount of about 1 to about 80 wt % of the final product.

5. The method of claim 1, further providing a molar ratio of aminosilane to silver of about 0.1:

6. The method of claim 5, further selectively adjusting a molar ratio to control silver distribution and size.

7. The method of claim 1, further providing about 5 g of aminopropyltriethoxysilane.

8. The method of claim 1, further providing about 0.5 g to about 2 g of AgNO₃.

9. The method of claim 1, further providing about 25 g Di water.

10. The method of claim 1, further providing about 12 g of ethanol.

11. The method of claim 1, further providing one of nitrogen or air as the carrier gas.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the nano structured composite comprises a plurality of nano particles at a contact surface of the composite.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the nano structured composite comprises a plurality of nano particles dispersed throughout and at a contact surface of the composite.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the nano structured composite comprises a plurality of nano particles dispersed throughout the composite.

15. A nano structured composite comprising:

a mixture of an amount of each of aminopropyltriethoxysilane, AgNO₃, DI water, and ethanol atomized in a carrier gas.

16. The composite of claim 15, further comprising about 1 to about 80 wt % of the atomized mixture.

17. The composite of claim 15, wherein a molar ratio of aminosilane to silver is about 0.1:

18. The composite of claim 15, further comprising about 5 g of aminopropyltriethoxysilane.

19. The composite of claim 15, further comprising about 0.5 g to about 2 g of AgNO₃.

20. The composite of claim 15, further comprising about 25 g DI water.

21. The composite of claim 15, further comprising about 12 g of ethanol.

22. The composite of claim 15, wherein the carrier gas comprises nitrogen or air.

23. The composite of claim 15, wherein the nano structured composite comprises a plurality of nano particles at a contact surface of the composite.

24. The composite of claim 15, wherein the nano structured composite comprises a plurality of nano particles dispersed throughout and at a contact surface of the composite.

25. The composite of claim 15, wherein the nano structured composite comprises a plurality of nano particles dispersed throughout the composite.
