Abstract

A relativity controller is a scroll bar/window combination that provides a way to see data in relation to both the context of its wholeness and the salience of its contents. To accomplish this, the linear density or other appearance of the scroll bar (acting as a ruler or scale) varies with the density of the document salience (as indicated by different kinds of annotations or marks). It also provides a way to zoom between perspectives. This is usable on many different data types: including sound, video, graphics, calendars and word processors.

19. A microprocessor based hardware and/or software system capable of generating a user interface for presenting a representation of a time based calendar where non-salient portions of the calendar are shrunk relative to the salient portions of the calendar based on calendar content.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein the shrinkage is controllable by the user.

21. The system of claim 19 where the salience is determined by the presence of content.

22. The system of claim 19 where the salience is determined by user input.

23. The system of claim 20 wherein the user control of the shrinkage includes a slider.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the slider includes a thumb graphic that indicates a degree of shrinkage setting.

25. The system of claim 19 wherein the shrinkage may be selected or deselected by the user.

26. The system of claim 19 wherein the shrinkage of at least one non-salient portion is complete.

27. The system of claim 19 wherein all the non-salient portions are not included in the presentation.

28. The system of claim 19 wherein only salient portions are presented.

29. The system of claim 19 wherein the presentation can be graphical and/or audio and/or video.

30. The system of claim 19 wherein the user interface further comprises of a scroll bar incorporating indicia of the location of salient portions of the calendar.

31. A microprocessor based hardware and/or software system capable of generating a user interface for presenting a representation of a time based calendar where salient portions of the calendar have been magnified relative to the non-salient portions of the calendar based on calendar content.

32. The system of claim 31 wherein the degree of magnification is controllable by the user.

33. The system of claim 31 where the salience of the content is determined by the presence of content.

34. The system of claim 31 where the salience is determined by user input.

35. The system of claim 32 wherein the user control of the magnification includes a slider.

36. The system of claim 35 wherein the slider includes a thumb graphic that indicates a degree of magnification setting.

37. The system of claim 31 wherein the magnification may be selected or deselected by the user.

38. The system of claim 31 wherein the magnification of at least one salient portion at least partially obscures at least one non-salient portion of the calendar.

39. The system of claim 31 wherein the presentation can be graphical and/or audio and/or video.

40. The system of claim 31 wherein the user interface further comprises of a scroll bar incorporating indicia of the location of salient portions of the calendar.

41. A microprocessor based hardware and/or software system capable of generating a user interface for presenting a representation of a time based calendar where the time base is non-linear based on calendar content.

42. The system of claim 41 wherein the degree of nonlinearity is variable.

43. The system of claim 42 wherein the variability of the nonlinearity is controllable by the user.

44. The system of claim 43 wherein the user control of the nonlinearity includes a slider.

45. The system of claim 44 wherein the slider includes a thumb graphic that indicates a degree of nonlinearity setting.

46. The system of claim 45 wherein the slider thumb graphic changes as the linearity control changes.

47. The system of claim 41 wherein the nonlinear representation may be selected or deselected by the user.
