Abstract

A surgical system with a variable controller that allows the user to selectively vary the level of venting performance.

Claims

1. A surgical system, comprising:

a handpiece having an aspiration function;

a control console;

an aspiration pump at least partially located in the control console, the aspiration pump providing vacuum to the surgical handpiece through an aspiration line;

an aspiration vent in the aspiration line between the handpiece and the pump; and

a user adjustable input device coupled to the control console, the user adjustable input device varying operation of the aspiration vent based upon user input.

3. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the user input comprises an operation timing for the aspiration vent and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises controlling the operation timing of the aspiration vent according to the user input.

4. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the user input comprises a requested drop in vacuum and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises venting the aspiration line by the requested drop in vacuum when venting is triggered.

5. The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the user input comprises a requested amount of aspiration fluid to displace and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises opening the vent until the requested amount of aspiration fluid has been displaced from the reservoir.

The surgical system of claim 1, wherein the user input comprises a selected level of venting adjustment, wherein the selected level is a relative level of venting selected from at least two venting levels, and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises venting the aspiration line according to predetermined parameters associated with the selected level.

2. A surgical system, comprising:

a handpiece having an aspiration function;

a control console;

an aspiration pump at least partially located in the control console, the aspiration pump providing vacuum to the surgical handpiece through an aspiration line;

an aspiration vent in the aspiration line between the handpiece and the pump; and

a user adjustable input device coupled to the control console, the user adjustable input device varying operation of the aspiration pump based upon user input, wherein the user adjustable input device is a touchscreen or a keyboard.

7. The surgical system of claim 2, wherein the user input comprises a requested drop in vacuum and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration pump comprises reducing a vacuum provided by the aspiration pump by the requested drop in vacuum.

8. The surgical system of claim 2, wherein the user input comprises a requested drop in vacuum and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration pump comprises reversing the aspiration pump until a vacuum level in the aspiration line is reduced by the requested drop in vacuum.

9. The surgical system of claim 2, wherein the user input comprises a selected level of venting adjustment, wherein the selected level is a relative level of venting selected from at least two venting levels, and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration pump comprises implementing pump parameters associated with the selected level.

10. A surgical system, comprising:

a handpiece having an aspiration function;

a control console;

an aspiration pump at least partially located in the control console, the aspiration pump providing vacuum to the surgical handpiece through an aspiration line;

an aspiration vent in the aspiration line between the handpiece and the pump; and

a touchscreen coupled to the control console, the touchscreen receiving user input and wherein the system is configured to vary operation of the aspiration vent and the aspiration pump based upon the user input.

11. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises an operation timing for the aspiration vent and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises controlling the operation timing of the aspiration vent according to the user input.

12. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises a requested drop in vacuum and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises venting the aspiration line by the requested drop in vacuum when venting is triggered.

13. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises a requested amount of aspiration fluid to displace and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises opening the vent until the requested amount of aspiration fluid has been displaced from the reservoir.

14. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises a selected level of venting adjustment, wherein the selected level is a relative level of venting selected from at least two venting levels, and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration vent comprises venting the aspiration line according to predetermined parameters associated with the selected level.

15. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises a requested drop in vacuum and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration pump comprises reducing a vacuum provided by the aspiration pump by the requested drop in vacuum.

16. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises a requested drop in vacuum and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration pump comprises reversing the aspiration pump until a vacuum level in the aspiration line is reduced by the requested drop in vacuum.

17. The surgical system of claim 10, wherein the user input comprises a selected level of venting adjustment, wherein the selected level is a relative level of venting selected from at least two venting levels, and wherein varying the operation of the aspiration pump comprises implementing pump parameters associated with the selected level.

18. The surgical system of claim 10, further comprising a keyboard coupled to the system for receiving user input.
