Abstract

A system for managing inventory on a market basis is disclosed. When employed by a transportation carrier, the system allows for the creation of a market group that includes a limited amount of space that is provided by any one or more of a certain group of physical routes (e.g., airline flights traveling between predetermined departure and destination points flying on selected dates). A qualifying customer or request may book one or more seats to this market group rather than to a specific physical route. The customer is guaranteed a seat on one of the physical routes, but is not informed as to the route on which travel will occur until a time closer to departure when the space allocated to the market group is mapped to the physical routes. In one embodiment, the market groups are defined using programmable business rules of a type interpreted by a rules engine.

Claims

1. An automated system for use by a transportation carrier, comprising:

a market group storage facility to store a market-based inventory describing space available within one or more market groups, each including selected space provided on selected physical routes of the transportation carrier; and

booking logic communicatively coupled to the market group storage facility to sell at least part of the selected space included in one of the market groups to customers without regard to which of the one or more physical routes will supply space that was sold.

2. The system of claim 1, and further including a flight storage facility communicatively coupled to the booking logic to store a flight-based inventory describing space available on one or more physical routes provided by the transportation carrier.

3. The system of claim 2, and further including availability logic to receive requests to book space on a requested physical route, and to fulfill the request only if:

the flight-based inventory indicates the requested space is available on the requested physical route, and

if the market-based inventory indicates the requested space has not already been sold to a market group that includes the requested space.

4. The system of claim 2, and further including availability logic to receive requests to book space on a requested physical route, and to fulfill the request only if

the flight-based inventory indicates the requested space is available on the requested physical route, and

if the market-based inventory indicates the requested space has not already been sold to a market group that includes the request space and for which the requested space has been reserved.

5. The system of claim 2, and further including mapping logic coupled to the market-based inventory to map any of the market groups to one or more of the selected physical routes included in the market group.

6. The system of claim 2, and further including a rules engine to interpret programmable business rules that perform at least one of the functions selected from a group consisting of:

defining the market groups;

controlling access to the market groups;

enabling use of the market groups;

disabling use of the market groups;

triggering mapping of the market groups to one or more of the selected physical routes;

mapping the market groups to one or more of the selected physical routes;

performing notification functions associated with the market groups; and

generating reports associated with the market groups.

7. The system of claim 2 further including notification logic to automatically generate notifications related to use of the market groups.

8. A computer-readable medium to cause a device to execute a method, comprising:

maintaining a market-based inventory that describes one or more market groups, each market group including selected space on one or more selected routes provided by a transportation carrier; and

selling to one or more customers at least a portion of the selected space included in one of the market groups without regard to which of the selected routes will provide the portion of the selected space.

9. The medium of claim 8, wherein the method further comprises:

maintaining a record for each of the market groups that identifies all space on the one or more selected routes that is available to provide the selected space for the market group; and

wherein the selling step includes updating the record for the one of the market groups.

10. The medium of claim 8, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a request to book one or more other customers to requested space on a requested route provided by the transportation carrier;

determining whether space is available on the requested route to satisfy the request, and further determining whether the record for a market group that includes the requested space indicates the requested space can be booked to the request, and if so, booking the one or more other customers to the requested space; and

updating the record for the market group that includes the requested space to indicate the requested space is no longer available for use by the market group.
