Abstract

A system for eliminating redundant notifications to SIP/SIMPLE subscribers, the system including a notification fingerprinter configured to generate a fingerprint from the contents of a SIP/SIMPLE subscriber notification using a predefined fingerprinting method, a fingerprint comparactor configured to compare a fingerprint of a previously-sent notification with a fingerprint of a waiting-to-be-sent notification, and a server configured to send the waiting-to-be-sent notification to the subscriber only if the fingerprints do not match.

Claims

1. A system for eliminating redundant notifications to SIP/SIMPLE subscribers, the system comprising:

a notification fingerprinter configured to generate a fingerprint from the contents of a SIP/SIMPLE subscriber notification using a predefined fingerprinting method;

a fingerprint comparator configured to compare a fingerprint of a previously-sent notification with a fingerprint of a waiting-to-be-sent notification; and

a server configured to send said waiting-to-be-sent notification to said subscriber only if said fingerprints do not match.

2. The system according to claim 1 wherein said server is configured to store said fingerprint of said previously-sent notification in a computer-readable storage medium together with an identifier of the subscriber to which said previously-sent notification was sent.

3. The system according to claim 2 wherein said server is configured to replace said stored fingerprint with said fingerprint of said waiting-to-be-sent notification if said fingerprints do not match.

4. The system according to claim 1 wherein said notification fingerprinter is configured to create a hash value from any of said notifications in accordance with a predefined hash algorithm.

5. The system according to claim 1 wherein said notification fingerprinter is configured to create said fingerprint wherein the probability that two different notifications will have the same fingerprint is below a predefined threshold.

6. The system according to claim 1 wherein said notification fingerprinter is configured to split any of said notifications into multiple segments, create a separate fingerprint for each of said segments, and form an overall fingerprint from said separate fingerprints.

7. The system according to claim 1 wherein any of said fingerprinter, said comparator, and said server are implemented in either of a) computer hardware and b) computer software embodied in a computer-readable medium.

8. A method for eliminating redundant notifications to SIP/SIMPLE subscribers, the method comprising:

generating a fingerprint from the contents of a first SIP/SIMPLE subscriber notification using a predefined fingerprinting method;

sending said first notification to said subscriber;

generating a fingerprint from the contents of a subsequent SIP/SIMPLE subscriber notification using said predefined fingerprinting method;

comparing said fingerprints; and

sending said subsequent notification to said subscriber only if said fingerprints do not match.

9. The method according to claim 8 and further comprising storing said fingerprint of said first notification in a computer-readable storage medium together with an identifier of the subscriber to which said first notification was sent.

10. The method according to claim 9 and further comprising replacing said stored fingerprint with said fingerprint of said subsequent notification if said fingerprints do not match.

11. The method according to claim 8 wherein either of said generating steps comprises creating a hash value from any of said notifications in accordance with a predefined hash algorithm.

12. The method according to claim 8 wherein either of said generating steps comprises creating said fingerprint wherein the probability that two different notifications will have the same fingerprint is below a predefined threshold.

13. The method according to claim 8 wherein either of said generating steps comprises splitting any of said notifications into multiple segments, creating a separate fingerprint for each of said segments, and forming an overall fingerprint from said separate fingerprints.

14. A computer program embodied on a computer-readable medium, the computer program comprising:

a first code segment operative to generate a fingerprint from the contents of a first SIP/SIMPLE subscriber notification using a predefined fingerprinting method;

a second code segment operative to sending said first notification to said subscriber;

a third code segment operative to generating a fingerprint from the contents of a subsequent SIP/SIMPLE subscriber notification using said predefined fingerprinting method;

a fourth code segment operative to comparing said fingerprints; and

a fifth code segment operative to sending said subsequent notification to said subscriber only if said fingerprints do not match.

15. The computer program according to claim 14 and further comprising a sixth code segment operative to store said fingerprint of said first notification in a computer-readable storage medium together with an identifier of the subscriber to which said first notification was sent.

16. The computer program according to claim 15 and further comprising a seventh code segment operative to replace said stored fingerprint with said fingerprint of said subsequent notification if said fingerprints do not match.

17. The computer program according to claim 14 wherein either of said code segments operative a generate a fingerprint is operative to create a hash value from any of said notifications in accordance with a predefined hash algorithm.

18. The computer program according to claim 14 wherein either of said code segments operative to generate a fingerprint is operative to create said fingerprint wherein the probability that two different notifications will have the same fingerprint is below a predefined threshold.

19. The computer program according to claim 14 wherein either of said code segments operative to generate a fingerprint is operative to split any of said notifications into multiple segments, create a separate fingerprint for each of said segments, and form an overall fingerprint from said separate fingerprints.
