Abstract

Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata. In one exemplary method, metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured, and the captured metadata is searched. The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for another type of file. Other methods are described and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.

Claims

1. A machine implemented method of managing data, the method comprising:

displaying, by a data processing system, a window having a plurality of first items and a plurality of second items;

displaying a control for selecting at least either a first type of view or a second type of view for at least one of the first items and the second items in the window;

displaying the plurality of first items in the first type of view within the window and simultaneously displaying the plurality of second items in the second type of view within the window concurrently with displaying the plurality of first items in the first type of view.

2. The method as in claim 1 wherein the window is a search results window and wherein the first type of view is an icon view and the second type of view is a list view.

3. The method as in claim 1 wherein the first items are grouped together and separately from the second items which are grouped together and wherein the first items are applications.

4. A machine readable storage medium storing executable program instructions for causing a data processing system to perform a method of managing data, the method comprising:

displaying a window having a plurality of first items and a plurality of second items;

displaying a control for selecting at least either a first type of view or a second type of view for at least one of the first items and the second items in the window;

displaying the plurality of first items in the first type of view within the window and simultaneously displaying the plurality of second items in the second type of view within the window concurrently with displaying the plurality of first items in the first type of view.

5. The machine readable storage medium as in claim 4 wherein the window is a search results window and wherein the first type of view is an icon view and the second type of view is a list view.

6. The machine readable storage medium as in claim 4 wherein the first items are grouped together and separately from the second items which are grouped together and wherein the first items are applications.

7. A data processing system comprising:

means for displaying, on a hardware display device, a window having a plurality of first items and a plurality of second items;

means for displaying a control for selecting at least either a first type of view or a second type of view for at least one of the first items and the second items in the window;

means for displaying the plurality of first items in the first type of view within the window and simultaneously displaying the plurality of second items in the second type of view within the window concurrently with displaying the plurality of first items in the first type of view.

8. The data processing system as in claim 7 wherein the window is a search results window and wherein the first type of view is an icon view and the second type of view is a list view.

9. The data processing system as in claim 7 wherein the first items are grouped together and separately from the second items which are grouped together and wherein the first items are applications.

10. A machine readable storage medium storing executable program instructions for causing a data processing system to perform a method comprising:

displaying a search results window which shows a plurality of items in the search results window, in response to performing a search, wherein a first group of items of the plurality of items are displayed in a first type of view and a second group of items of the plurality of items are simultaneously displayed in a second type of view concurrently with the first group being displayed in the first type of view.

11. The machine readable storage medium as in claim 10 wherein the first type of view is a list view and the second type of view is an icon view.

12. The machine readable storage medium as in claim 10 wherein the first group are displayed in a group together and separately from the second group which are displayed in another group and wherein the group of items are applications.

13. The machine readable storage medium as in claim 10 wherein the search is performed through metadata for a plurality of files, wherein the type of information in metadata for a first type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for a second type of file.

14. A machine implemented method comprising:

displaying, by a data processing system, a search results window which shows a plurality of items in the search results window, in response to performing a search, wherein a first croup of items of the plurality of items are displayed in a first type of view and a second group of items of the plurality of items are simultaneously displayed in a second type of view concurrently with the first group being displayed in the first type of view.

15. The method as in claim 14 wherein the first type of view is a list view and the second type of view is an icon view.

16. The method as in claim 14 wherein the first group are displayed in a group together and separately from the second group which are displayed in another group and wherein the first group of items are applications.

17. The method as in claim 14 wherein the search is performed through metadata for a plurality of files, wherein the type of information in metadata for a first type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for a second type of file.

18. A data processing system comprising:

means for displaying, on a hardware display device, a search results window which shows a plurality of items in the search results window, in response to performing a search, wherein a first group of items of the plurality of items are displayed in a first type of view and a second group of items of the plurality of items are simultaneously displayed in a second type of view concurrently with the first group being displayed in the first type of view.

19. The data processing system as in claim 18 wherein the first type of view is a list view and the second type of view is an icon view.

20. The data processing system as in claim 18 wherein the first group are displayed in a group together and separately from the second group which are displayed in another group and wherein the first group of items are applications.

21. The data processing system as in claim 18 wherein the search is performed through metadata for a plurality of files, wherein the type of information in metadata for a first type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for a second type of file.
