Abstract

Caller identification with caller geographical location is provided. The caller'"'"'s geographical location represents the actual or approximate geographical location of the caller at the time the call is placed rather than the billing or exchange location. Additional information can be requested based on the caller'"'"'s geographical location, such as directions, nearby sites of interest, and traffic reports. A call recipient can request that this additional information be sent to the caller. For privacy purposes and security, a caller can limit the amount of information that is transmitted to call recipients.

Claims

1. A method for providing caller identification with caller geographical location, the method comprising:

determining a caller'"'"'s geographical location;

providing caller identification information comprising the caller'"'"'s geographical location.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing directions to the caller'"'"'s geographical location.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a map of an area comprising the caller'"'"'s geographical location.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing at least one option to display information based on the caller'"'"'s geographical location.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the caller'"'"'s geographical location is determined by determining the global positioning system (GPS) coordinates of a caller'"'"'s mobile device.

6. A mobile communications device configured to:

receive a request to place a voice call, the request comprising a telephone number associated with a recipient;

determine a geographical location of the mobile communications device; and

determine a privacy level associated with the telephone number.

7. The mobile communications device of claim 6, further configured to:

if the privacy level associated with the telephone number permits transmission of the geographical location to the recipient, transmit the geographical location to the recipient.

8. The mobile communications device of claim 6, further configured to:

if the privacy level associated with the telephone number does not permit transmission of the geographical location to the recipient, transmit other identifying information to the recipient, the other identifying information not including the geographical location.

9. The mobile communications device of claim 6, wherein the geographical location of the mobile communications device is determined by triangulation.

10. The mobile communications device of claim 6, further configured to:

determine a general geographical location and a specific geographical location based on the geographical location;

if the privacy level associated with the telephone number permits transmission of the specific geographical location to the recipient, transmit the specific geographical location to the recipient; and

if the privacy level associated with the telephone number does not permit transmission of the specific geographical location to the recipient and permits transmission of the general geographical location to the recipient, transmit the general geographical location to the recipient.

11. A system for processing caller identification information, the system comprising:

a receiver for receiving caller identification information comprising a caller'"'"'s geographical location from a caller;

an input for activating a request to retrieve information based on the geographical location;

an output for providing the retrieved information.

12. The system of claim 11, further comprising:

an input for receiving a request to transmit the retrieved information to the caller; and

a transmitter for transmitting the retrieved information to the caller.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the retrieved information is transmitted to the caller in a text message.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the retrieved information comprises turn-by-turn driving directions.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the retrieved information comprises directions to the geographical location.

16. A computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon computer-executable instructions for performing the steps of:

receiving a call request from a first mobile communications device, the call request comprising a telephone number associated with a second mobile communications device;

determining a geographical location associated with the first mobile communications device;

establishing a connection between the first mobile communications device and the second mobile communications device; and

transmitting the geographical location to the second mobile communications device.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the geographical location associated with the first mobile communications device is determined based on a cellular tower identifier.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein the step of transmitting the geographical location to the second mobile communications device further comprises instructions for performing the steps of:

determining a privacy level associated with the second mobile communications device; and

modifying the geographical location based on the privacy level before transmitting the geographical location to the second mobile communications device.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the privacy level is determined based on the telephone number associated with the second mobile communications device.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, further comprising instructions for performing the steps of:

receiving from the second mobile communications device a request for information based on the geographical location; and

transmitting to the second mobile communications device the requested information.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, further comprising instructions for performing the steps of:

receiving from the second mobile communications device a request for information based on the geographical location; and

transmitting to the first mobile communications device the requested information.

22. A method for determining a current geographical location of a caller after the termination of a call, the method comprising:

selecting caller identification information associated with the terminated call from a call log, the caller identification information comprising an initial geographical location, wherein the initial geographical location is based on the location of the caller at the time of the terminated call;

requesting a current geographical location for the caller; and

receiving the current geographical location for the caller, wherein the current geographical location is based on the location of the caller at the time of the request for the current geographical location.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

requesting information relating to the current geographical location; and

receiving the requested information.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the requested information comprises directions to the current geographical location.
