Abstract

A paddle lead includes a paddle body with a plurality of electrodes disposed on the paddle body. The plurality of electrodes includes a first electrode and a second electrode. The first electrode and the second electrode are disposed laterally around the circumference of the paddle body. At least one connecting wire is disposed on, or within, the paddle body to electrically couple the first electrode and the second electrode.

Claims

1. A paddle lead, comprising:

a paddle body;

a plurality of electrodes disposed on the paddle body, the plurality of electrodes comprising a first electrode and a second electrode, the first electrode and the second electrode being disposed laterally around the circumference of the paddle body; and

at least one connecting wire disposed on, or within, the paddle body to electrically couple the first electrode and the second electrode.

2. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein the plurality of electrodes includes at least one coupled arrangement, the at least one coupled arrangement including the first electrode and the second electrode.

3. The paddle lead of claim 2, wherein electrodes in the at least one coupled arrangement are electrically coupled together by a plurality of the connecting wires.

4. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein the paddle body further comprises an anterior surface and an inferior surface opposite the anterior surface, and wherein the first electrode is disposed on the anterior surface and the second electrode is disposed on the inferior surface.

5. The paddle lead of claim 4, wherein the first electrode is disposed opposite to the second electrode.

6. The paddle lead of claim 5, wherein the plurality of electrodes is disposed in similar orientations on the anterior surface and the inferior surface, wherein each electrode on the anterior surface is coupled to a corresponding electrode on the inferior surface via one of the connecting wires.

7. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein at least one of the connecting wires is a transverse connecting wire that is disposed within the paddle body.

8. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein at least one of the connecting wires is a peripheral connecting wire that is disposed on the surface of the paddle body.

9. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein one of the connecting wires directly connects the first electrode and the second electrode.

10. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein the paddle body is flexible.

11. The paddle lead of claim 1, wherein the paddle body is fabricated from a non-conductive, biocompatible material suitable for subcutaneous implantation.

12. A stimulation system, comprising:

the paddle lead of claim 1; and

a control module coupleable to the paddle lead.

13. A paddle lead, comprising:

a lead body for coupling the paddle lead to one or more external devices; and

a paddle body distal to the lead body, the paddle body comprising a plurality of electrodes disposed on the paddle body, the plurality of electrodes forming at least one lateral loop around the circumference of the paddle body.

14. The paddle lead of claim 13, wherein at least one lateral loop around the circumference of the paddle body is formed from a single electrode.

15. The paddle lead of claim 13, wherein at least one lateral loop around the circumference of the paddle body is formed from a coupled arrangement, the coupled arrangement comprising a plurality of electrodes with a plurality of connecting wires electrically coupling the electrodes.

16. The paddle lead of claim 15, wherein the coupled arrangement comprises a first electrode, a second electrode, and at least two connecting wires electrically coupling the first electrode to the second electrode.

17. The paddle lead of claim 16, wherein at least one of the connecting wires is a transverse connecting wire that is disposed within the paddle body.

18. The paddle lead of claim 16, wherein at least one of the connecting wires is a peripheral connecting wire that is disposed on the surface of the paddle body.

19. A method of using a paddle lead, comprising:

implanting a paddle lead into a body, the paddle lead comprising;

a paddle body;

a plurality of electrodes disposed on the paddle body, the plurality of electrodes comprising a first electrode and a second electrode, the first electrode and the second electrode being disposed laterally around the circumference of the paddle body; and

at least one connecting wire disposed on, or within, the paddle body to electrically couple the first electrode and the second electrode;

coupling the paddle lead to a control module; and

stimulating tissue near the paddle lead using two or more of the electrodes.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the paddle body further comprises an anterior surface and an inferior surface opposite the anterior surface, and wherein the first electrode is disposed on the anterior surface and the second electrode is disposed on the inferior surface.
