Abstract

A method of managing an IP call between a calling party and a called party, the method comprising receiving, at a gateway, a request to set up the call from the calling party; determining, from the request, a requirement to route the call through an interceptor; forwarding the request from the gateway to the interceptor; setting up an IP call between the interceptor and the called party; setting up an IP call between the interceptor and the calling party; and operating the interceptor as a back-to-back user agent (B2BUA) between the calling party and the called party.

Claims

1. A method of managing an IP call between a calling party and a called party, the method comprising:

receiving, at a gateway, a request to set up the call from the calling party;

determining, from the request, a requirement to route the call through an interceptor;

forwarding the request from the gateway to the interceptor;

setting up an IP call between the interceptor and the called party;

setting up an IP call between the interceptor and the calling party; and

operating the interceptor to forward information from the called party to the calling party and from the calling party to the called party.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising recording at least one of information and messages exchanged between the calling party and the called party.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising using IP address translation to translate the IP address of the interceptor.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3, comprising using IP address translation such that the IP address of the interceptor appears to the calling party to be the IP address of the called party.

5. A method as claimed in claim 3, comprising using IP address translation such that the IP address of the interceptor appears to the called party to be the IP address of the calling party.

6. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein setting up the IP call between the interceptor and the called party comprises setting up a secure IP call.

7. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein setting up the IP call between the interceptor and the calling party comprises setting up a secure IP call.

8. A method as claimed in claim 1, comprising:

receiving a request to intercept IP calls that meet criteria; and

configuring the gateway to route IP calls meeting the criteria through the interceptor;

and wherein determining a requirement to route the call through the interceptor comprises determining whether the call meets the criteria.

9. A method as claimed in claim 1, comprising operating the interceptor as a back-to-back user agent (B2BUA) between the calling party and the called party.

21. A computer program comprising computer readable instructions for implementing the method of claim 1.

22. A data processing system having loaded therein a computer program as claimed in claim 21.

23. Computer readable storage storing a computer program as claimed in claim 21.

10. An IP network for managing an IP call between a calling party and a called party, the IP network comprising a gateway and an interceptor, wherein the IP network is arranged to:

receive, at the gateway, a request to set up the call from the calling party;

determine, from the request, a requirement to route the call through the interceptor;

forward the request from the gateway to the interceptor;

set up an IP call between the interceptor and the called party;

set up an IP call between the interceptor and the calling party; and

operate the interceptor to forward information from the called party to the calling party and from the calling party to the called party.

11. An IP network as claimed in claim 10, further arranged to record at least one of information and messages exchanged between the calling party and the called party.

12. An IP network as claimed in claim 10, further arranged to use IP address translation to translate the IP address of the interceptor.

13. An IP network as claimed in claim 12, arranged to use IP address translation such that the IP address of the interceptor appears to the calling party to be the IP address of the called party.

14. An IP network as claimed in claim 12, arranged to use IP address translation such that the IP address of the interceptor appears to the called party to be the IP address of the calling party.

15. An IP network as claimed in claim 10, arranged to set up the IP call between the interceptor and the called party by setting up a secure IP call.

16. An IP network as claimed in claim 10, arranged to set up the IP call between the interceptor and the calling party by setting up a secure IP call.

17. An IP network as claimed in claim 10, arranged to:

receive a request to intercept IP calls that meet criteria; and

configure the gateway to route IP calls meeting the criteria through the interceptor;

and further arranged to determine a requirement to route the call through the interceptor by determining whether the call meets the criteria.

18. An IP network as claimed in claim 10, comprising operating the interceptor as a back-to-back user agent (B2BUA) between the calling party and the called party.

19. An IP network gateway, arranged to:

receive a request to set up an IP call from a calling party, the request intended for a called party;

determine a requirement to route the call through an interceptor;

forward the request to the interceptor instead of the called party.

20. An IP network gateway as claimed in claim 19, arranged to determine a requirement to route the call through the interceptor by determining whether the call meets criteria.
