Abstract

In one aspect, a method for realizing a presence service with a buddy list that can be displayed on a display device of a terminal is provided. In an activated state, the buddy list itself is displayed, and in a deactivated state, the buddy list itself is not visible. The buddy list is updated by a control device during a change in state of at lest one subscriber to be monitored and/or of at least one device assigned to the subscriber. According to the invention, the updating of the buddy list ensues in the deactivated state by means of the control device while using a method other than one used in the activated state.

19. A method for achieving a presence service in a communication network, comprising:

providing user information displayed on a display device of a terminal in an activated state and in a deactivated state the user information is not visible;

updating via a controller the user information after a change in state of a user to be monitored or a device associated with the monitored user,

wherein the user information is updated by the controller differently in the deactivated state than in the activated state.

20. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein in the user information selected from the group consisting of:

information about users to be monitored, information about the devices of the monitored users, and combinations thereof

21. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein the deactivated state exists if:

the user information is hidden on the display device, or

the user information is situated outside of a visible region of the display device, or

the user information is shown by a symbol representing the user information, or

a portion of the user information is shown by a symbol representing this portion.

22. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein when in the activated state the user information is updated after the state change.

23. The method as claimed in claim 22, wherein when in the activated state the user information is updated immediately after the state change.

24. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein when in the deactivated state the user information is updated after a time interval after the state change.

25. The method as claimed in claim 24, wherein for the updating the user information a last valid state of monitored user or device is transmitted.

26. The method as claimed in claim 24, wherein for the case of changes in state of a plurality of users to be monitored or devices associated to the users, the state changes are transmitted to the terminal collected in a group message.

27. The method as claimed in claim 24, wherein for an increasing period of time during which the user information is in the deactivated state, the time interval is extended.

28. The method as claimed in claim 24, wherein the time intervals are set user-individually or controller-individually.

29. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein for realtime-critical and non-realtime-critical the state of the monitored user or device is displayed via of the user information.

30. The method as claimed in claim 29, wherein for the deactivated state the user information is updated in the case of changes in non-realtime-critical states of the monitored user or device.

31. The method as claimed in claim 29, wherein for the deactivated state the user information is updated only in the case of changes in non-realtime-critical states of the monitored user or device.

32. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein for the deactivated state transmission of a corresponding change message from the controller to the terminal is suppressed.

33. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein following a change from the deactivated state to the activated state the user information is updated immediately.

34. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein transmission of information regarding the fact that the user information is in the deactivated state takes places implicitly in that the connection between the controller and the terminal is broken by the terminal.

35. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein transmission of information regarding the fact that the user information is in the activated or deactivated state takes places by way of explicit signaling.

36. The method as claimed in claim 35, wherein for cases where a deactivated signal is signaled, information about whether updating the user information should continue to take place or not is also transmitted.

37. A presence system for achieving a presence service in a communication network, comprising:

providing user information displayed on a display device of a terminal in an activated state and in a deactivated state the user information is not visible;

updating via a controller the user information after a change in state of a user to be monitored or a device associated with the monitored user,

wherein the user information is updated by the controller differently in the deactivated state than in the activated state.

38. The presence system as claimed in claim 37, wherein the terminal is a personal computer, a corded telephone, a mobile phone or a Personal Digital Assistant.
