Abstract

Disclosed are a network-based device, method and computer readable medium for operating an IMS to provide IMS services to originating sessions from a device upon which the user is not registered. The method includes receiving communication from a user on a device upon which the user is not registered at a 2-stage dialing server, authenticating the user, determining a Public User ID (PUID) for the user, receiving an identification of a called party from the user, arranging for IMS services to be provided to the user on the device, sending an INVITE signal from the 2-stage dialing server on behalf of the user PUID to the called party and setting up the media connection from the device to the device associated with the called party.

Claims

1. A method of operating an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to provide IMS services to originating sessions from a device upon which a user is not registered, the method comprising:

receiving communication from a user on a device upon which the user is not registered at a 2-stage dialing server;

authenticating the user;

determining a Public User ID (PUID) for the user;

receiving an identification of a called party from the user;

arranging for IMS services to be provided to the user on the device;

sending an INVITE signal from the 2-stage dialing server on behalf of the user PUID to the called party; and

setting up a media connection from the device to the device associated with the called party.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the PUID further comprises determining whether there is one or more allowed PUIDs for the user, and if there are more than one PUID, then:

engaging in a dialog with the user to present the more than one user PUID and receive a selection of a chosen PUID for the session.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the communication from the user at the 2-stage dialing server comprises receiving an addressing signal of a phone number or a SIP Public Service Identity (PSI) or a SIP Public User Identity (PUID).

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining a PUID for the user comprises communicating via an Sh interface with a Home Subsystem Service (HSS).

5. The method of claim 1, wherein arranging for IMS service to be provided to the user comprises registering the PUID of the User at the device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving an identification of a called party from the user further comprises communicating with a personal address database associated with the user.

7. A network-based device for providing IMS services to a network-based device in an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for providing IMS services to originating sessions from a device upon which a user is not registered, the network-based device comprising:

a module configured to receive communication from a user on a device upon which the user is not registered at a 2-stage dialing server;

a module configured to authenticate the user;

a module configured to determine a Public User ID (PUID) for the user;

a module configured to receive an identification of a called party from the user;

a module configured to arrange for IMS services to be provided to the user on the device;

a module configured to send an INVITE signal from the 2-stage dialing server on behalf of the user PUID to the called party; and

a module configured to set up a media connection from the device to the device associated with the called party.

8. The network-based device of claim 7, wherein the module configured to determine the PUID further determines whether there is one or more allowed PUIDs for the user, and if there are more than one PUID, then the modules further:

engages in a dialog with the user to present the more than one user PUID and receive a selection of a chosen PUID for the session.

9. The network-based device of claim 7, wherein the module configured to receive the communication from the user at the 2-stage dialing server further receives an addressing signal of a phone number or a SIP Public Service Identity (PSI) or a SIP Public User Identity (PUID).

10. The network-based device of claim 7, wherein the module configured to determine a PUID for the user further communicates via an Sh interface with a Home Subsystem Service (HSS).

11. The network-based device of claim 7, wherein the module configured to arrange for IMS service to be provided to the user further registers the PUID of the user at the device.

12. The network-based device of claim 7, wherein the module configured to receive an identification of a called party from the user further communicates with a personal address database associated with the user.

13. A computer readable medium storing instructions for controlling a network-based computing device in an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) to provide IMS services to originating sessions from a device upon which the user is not registered, the instructions comprising:

receiving communication from a user on a device upon which the user is not registered at a 2-stage dialing server;

authenticating the user;

determining a Public User ID (PUID) for the user;

receiving an identification of a called party from the user;

arranging for IMS services to be provided to the user on the device;

sending an INVITE signal from the 2-stage dialing server on behalf of the user PUID to the called party; and

setting up a media connection from the device to the device associated with the called party.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein the instruction of determining the PUID further comprises determining whether there is one or more allowed PUIDs for the user, and if there are more than one PUID, then:

engaging in a dialog with the user to present the more than one user PUID and receive a selection of a chosen PUID for the session.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein the instruction of receiving the communication from the user at the 2-stage dialing server comprises receiving an addressing signal of a phone number or a SIP Public Service Identity (PSI) or a SIP Public User Identity (PUID).

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein determining a PUID for the user comprises communicating via an Sh interface with a Home Subsystem Service (HSS).

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein arranging for IMS service to be provided to the user comprises registering the PUID of the user at the device.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 13, wherein receiving an identification of a called party from the user further comprises communicating with a personal address database associated with the user.
