1. A system for monitoring and controlling power consumption, comprising:
- a power grid interface for connecting to a power grid;
a device interface for connecting to a power-consuming device;
a monitoring and control unit, in communication with the power grid interface and the device interface, for connecting the power-consuming device to the power grid, generating monitoring data about the power usage of the power-consuming device, and for controlling the power usage of the power-consuming device;
a memory, in communication with the monitoring and control unit, for storing the monitoring data;
a location detector, in communication with the memory and the power-consuming device, for determining the location of the power-consuming device, relative to the power grid; and
a communication unit, in communication with the monitoring and control unit, the memory, and the location detector, for transmitting the monitoring data and the location of the power-consuming device to a network-based device.

Abstract
The invention generally concerns systems and methods for monitoring and controlling the power consumption of a power-consuming device. The system and method may connect to a power source and a power-consuming device, connecting the power-consuming device to the power source. The power usage of the power-consuming device may then be measured and monitored. This monitoring data may then be stored and optionally sent to a controlling device on a data network. The location of the power-consuming device may also be determined, recorded, and sent to a controlling device. The system may also control the power usage of the power-consuming device. In some cases, a remote server may connect multiple energy monitoring systems in order to gain additional efficiencies and foster a community-based social network.

for writing and reading from the database;
for aggregating and analyzing the monitoring data to determine improved efficiency modifications for energy monitoring systems belonging to the plurality of users; and
