Abstract

This disclosure concerns rotary axial peristaltic pumps, related methods and components. The rotary axial peristaltic pump generally includes a platen having a platen surface, a tube positioned adjacent to the platen surface, a cam that rotates about a rotational axis and a cam surface that is spaced apart from the platen surface and a plurality of tube compressing fingers. The fingers move axially back and forth in sequence to sequentially compress segments or regions of the tube against the platen surface, thereby causing peristaltic movement of fluid through the tube. The fingers move back and forth on axes that are substantially parallel to the axis about which the cam rotates.

Claims

1. A peristaltic pump device comprising:

a platen having a platen surface;

a tube positioned adjacent to the platen surface;

a cam configured for rotation about a rotational axis, said cam having a cam surface that is spaced apart from the platen surface; and

a plurality of fingers, each finger having an occluder nearer the tube, each finger also having a first spring for urging the finger away from the tube and a longitudinal axis that is substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the cam, said fingers being in engagement with the cam surface such that, as the cam rotates about the rotational axis, the fingers will move axially back and forth, sequentially compressing the tube against the platen surface and thereby causing peristaltic movement of fluid through the tube.

2. A device according to claim 1, wherein each finger further comprises a second spring for urging the occluder into contact with the tube.

3. A device according to claim 1, wherein the platen surface is substantially planar.

4. A device according to claim 1, wherein the cam surface comprises a plurality of lobes, each lobe having a peak, the peak of each lobe being closer to the platen surface than a remainder of the cam surface.

5. A device according to claim 1, further comprising a tube holder that holds the tubing adjacent to the platen surface.

6. A device according to claim 1, further comprising a pivotally connected door.

7. A device according to claim 1, further comprising a replaceable tube cassette which includes said tube.

8. A device according to claim 1, further comprising a door, wherein the platen surface is on an inner surface of the door and at least one indentation is formed in said platen surface such that the tube will be substantially juxtaposed to the platen surface when the door is closed.

9. A peristaltic pump device comprising:

a platen having a platen surface;

a tube positioned adjacent to the platen surface;

a cam configured for rotation about a rotational axis, said cam having a cam surface that is spaced apart from the platen surface;

a motor operably connected for driving the cam; and

a plurality of fingers, each finger comprising a torsion spring for urging the finger away from the tube and a longitudinal axis that is substantially parallel to the rotational axis of the cam, said fingers in engagement with the cam surface and configured so that as the cam rotates about the rotational axis, the fingers move axially back and forth, sequentially compressing the tube against the platen surface and thereby causing peristaltic movement of fluid through the tube.

10. A device according to claim 9, wherein the finger further comprises a second spring for urging the finger towards the platen surface.

11. A device according to claim 9, wherein the finger further comprises an occluder for bearing against the tube and a second spring for urging the occluder into contact with the tube.

12. A device according to claim 11, wherein the finger further comprises a head portion adjacent the occluder, the head portion further comprising at least one device for limiting movement of the second spring and the occluder.

13. A device according to claim 9, wherein a portion of the torsion spring rides on a housing of the device, and the torsion spring is configured for urging the finger away from the tube as the cam rotates.

14. A device according to claim 9, wherein each finger comprises a head portion nearer the platen and a rear portion nearer the cam, and wherein the head portion and the rear portion are moveable with respect to each other.

15. A peristaltic pump device, comprising:

a platen having a platen surface;

a tube positioned adjacent to the platen surface;

a cam configured for rotation about a rotational axis, said cam having a cam surface that is spaced apart from the platen surface; and

a plurality of fingers, each finger comprising a first spring for urging the finger away from tube, each finger in engagement with the cam surface and configured so that as the cam rotates about the rotational axis, the fingers move axially back and forth, sequentially compressing the tube against the platen surface, thereby causing peristaltic movement of fluid through the tube.

16. A device according to claim 15, wherein a head portion of each finger further comprises a separately-moveable occluder.

17. A device according to claim 16, further comprising a second spring configured for allowing movement of the occluder separate from movement of the finger.

18. A device according to claim 15, wherein the cam surface includes a substantially flat, concave or convex race.

19. A device according to claim 18, wherein the race comprises a groove having a wall selected from the group comprising a substantially accurate wall, a substantially V-shaped wall, a substantially tapered wall, and a raised area on the cam.

20. A device according to claim 18, wherein each finger has a roller configured for riding on or in the race.

21. A device according to claim 19, wherein each finger has a substantially spherical roller configured for riding against the substantially accurate wall.

22. A device according to claim 19, wherein each finger has a roller configured for riding against locations on opposing sides of the substantially V-shaped wall.

23. A device according to claim 19, wherein each finger has a roller configured for riding against the substantially tapered wall.

24. A device according to claim 19, wherein each finger has a roller configured for riding on the raised area.

25. A device according to claim 15, wherein a portion of the first spring of each finger rides against the housing, the first spring configured for causing reciprocal movement of the fingers as the cam rotates.

26. A peristaltic pump device, comprising:

a platen having a platen surface;

a tube positioned adjacent to the platen surface;

a cam configured for rotation about a rotational axis, said cam having a cam surface that is spaced apart from the platen surface; and

a plurality of fingers in engagement with the cam surface, each finger having a first part moveable with respect to a second part, and each finger having a first spring for urging the finger away from the tube and a second spring for urging the first part away from the second part, and configured so that as the cam rotates about the rotational axis, the fingers move axially back and forth, sequentially compressing the tube against the platen surface and thereby causing peristaltic movement of fluid through the tube.

27. A device according to claim 26, wherein each finger includes an occlusion element configured for compressing the tube to substantially occlude a tube lumen during a portion of the pumping cycle.

28. A device according to claim 26, wherein a transverse slot is formed in each finger and further comprising a portion of an occluder slidably disposed within the transverse slot.

29. A device according to claim 26, wherein the tube further comprises a tube cassette.

30. A device according to claim 29, wherein the tube cassette incorporates an identifying feature that is identifiable by the pumping device.

31. A device according to claim 26, further comprising a controller for controlling the operation of the device.

32. A device according to claim 31, wherein the tube is mounted in or on a tube cassette, wherein the tube cassette incorporates an identifying feature that is identifiable by the controller, and wherein the controller is programmed to deter operation of the device with a cassette that does not incorporate an acceptable identifying feature.
