Abstract

A process for generating a user model to be used in providing personalized advertisements to a specific user includes the steps of collecting user-specific data while the specific user is interacting with any of a plurality of retailers. The process further includes generating a user model for the specific user utilizing the user-specific data and using the model to generate a personalized advertisement for presentation to the user. An arrangement for generating a user model to be used in providing personalized advertisements to a specific user includes memory for storing user-specific data collected from user interactions with any of a plurality of retailers and a controller that generates a user model for the specific user utilizing the user-specific data and uses the model to generate a personalized advertisement for presentation to one of the users for which user-specific data has been collected.

Claims

1. A process for generating a user model to be used in providing personalized advertisements to a specific user comprising the steps of:

collecting user-specific data while the specific user is interacting with any of a plurality of retailers;

generating a user model for the specific user utilizing the user-specific data; and

using the model to generate a personalized advertisement for presentation to the user for which user-specific data has been collected.

2. The process of claim 1 further comprising the steps of collecting user-specific data from one or more third party data providers.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein user-specific data includes user identification data.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein user-specific data includes user demographic data.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein user-specific data includes activity data regarding purchases, product views, and searches for a specific user.

6. The process of claim 5 wherein the user-specific data further incorporates the product attributes of the associated products.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein user-specific data includes activity data regarding user lists for a specific user.

8. The process of claim 1 further comprising the step of providing the personalized advertisement to the one or more of the users via an electronic format.

9. The process of claim 8 wherein the electronic format is displayed on a webpage.

10. The process of claim 8 wherein the electronic format is not associated with the specific retailer with which the user was interacting.

11. The process of claim 1 wherein the steps of collecting data occur as part of an online process.

12. The process of claim 1 wherein the step of generating a personalized electronic advertisement occurs in real time.

13. The process of claim 1 wherein generating a personalized advertisement includes using a weighted scoring system identifying correlations using the user model.

14. The process of claim 1 wherein the personalized advertisement is a non-competitive personalized advertisement.

15. An arrangement for generating a user model to be used in providing personalized advertisements to a specific user comprising:

memory for storing user-specific data collected from user interactions with any of a plurality of retailers; and

a controller that generates a user model for the specific user utilizing the user-specific data and uses the model to generate a personalized advertisement for presentation to one of the users for which user-specific data has been collected.

16. The arrangement of claim 15 wherein the controller presents the personalized advertisement to the user via an electronic format.

17. The arrangement of claim 15 wherein the personalized advertisement is a non-competitive personalized advertisement.

18. A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for selecting personalized non-competitive electronic advertising from a plurality of competitive and non-competitive advertisements, the computer-executable instructions causing the arrangement to perform the steps of:

collecting user-specific data while the specific user is interacting with any of a plurality of retailers;

generating a user model for the specific user utilizing the user-specific data; and

using the model to generate a personalized advertisement for presentation to the user for which user-specific data has been collected.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18 wherein the controller presents the personalized advertisement to the user via an electronic format.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 18 wherein the personalized advertisement is a non-competitive personalized advertisement.
