Abstract

An end-to-end mobile advertising system characterizes user behavior with regard to a mobile communication device in order to select micro-targeted advertisements. In particular, “keyword” usage in mobile applications can serve as a basis or augment a user behavioral profile. The types of keywords monitored address the particular user interface limitations and uses of a mobile communication device, such as dialed telephone messages, applets, or triglets downloaded, RSS feeds selected, and search terms or navigation links used in a wireless WAP. A marketplace platform handles the formatting required for presentation suitable for mobile communication devices in accordance with negotiated tags for a desired audience (“reach”), for a suitable number of presentations (“frequency”) and for an effective duration (“time”) within a particular scheduled window. Effectiveness is gauged even in the instance of impression advertisements by monitoring user location and/or interaction with the communication device to see a change in behavior.

Claims

1. A method for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

transmitting user interaction data to a network for inferring a user behavioral profile;

receiving an advertisement formatted for the mobile communication device selected based on the user behavioral profile; and

presenting the advertisement on the mobile communication device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a publicly switched telephone network destination.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

4. The method of claim 2, further comprising monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising presenting the advertisement on the mobile communication device in accordance with frequency and time goals associated with the advertisement.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring and transmitting user interaction with the presented advertisement for network to refine a user behavioral profile.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring user interaction selected as more than one of an initiated telephone call, a keyword search on mobile browser, a media content selection on a mobile application, a selection of an advertisement action, or a navigation selection to a network data packet destination.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a first mobile browser application; and

monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a second mobile browser application.

12. At least one processor for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

a module for monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

a module for monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

a module for transmitting user interaction data to a network for inferring a user behavioral profile;

a module for receiving an advertisement formatted for the mobile communication device selected based on the user behavioral profile; and

a module for presenting the advertisement on the mobile communication device.

13. A computer program product for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

a computer-readable medium, comprising;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to monitor user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to monitor user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to transmit user interaction data to a network for inferring a user behavioral profile;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to receive an advertisement formatted for the mobile communication device selected based on the user behavioral profile; and

at least one instruction for causing a computer to present the advertisement on the mobile communication device.

14. An apparatus for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

means for monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

means for monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

means for transmitting user interaction data to a network for inferring a user behavioral profile;

means for receiving an advertisement formatted for the mobile communication device selected based on the user behavioral profile; and

means for presenting the advertisement on the mobile communication device.

15. An apparatus for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

user interface;

computing platform;

usage monitor for monitoring user interaction input to the user interface with a first communication function of a mobile communication device and for monitoring user interaction input to the user interface with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution on the computing platform from the first communication function;

wireless transmitter for transmitting user interaction data to a network for inferring a user behavioral profile; and

wireless receiver for receiving an advertisement formatted for the mobile communication device selected based on the user behavioral profile,

wherein the user interface presents the advertisement on the mobile communication device.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a publicly switched telephone network destination.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

19. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

21. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

22. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising an advertisement selection and tracking component for presenting the advertisement on the mobile communication device in accordance with frequency and time goals associated with the advertisement.

23. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring and transmitting user interaction with the presented advertisement for network to refine a user behavioral profile.

24. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction selected as more than one of an initiated telephone call, a keyword search on mobile browser, a media content selection on a mobile application, a selection of an advertisement action, or a navigation selection to a network data packet destination.

25. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising the usage monitor for monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of a mobile communication device of a keyword search on a first mobile browser application, and for monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a second mobile browser application.

26. A method for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

remotely monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

remotely monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

receiving user interaction data to a network and inferring a user behavioral profile;

selecting an advertisement based on the user behavioral profile formatted for the mobile communication device; and

transmitting the selected advertisement for being presented on the mobile communication device.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a publicly switched telephone network destination.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

29. The method of claim 27, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

30. The method of claim 26, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

32. The method of claim 26, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

33. The method of claim 26, further comprising directing the mobile communication device to present the advertisement in accordance with frequency and time goals associated with the advertisement.

34. The method of claim 26, further comprising inferring a refinement to a user behavioral profile by remotely monitoring user interaction with the presented advertisement.

35. The method of claim 26, further comprising remotely monitoring user interaction selected as more than one of an initiated telephone call, a keyword search on mobile browser, a media content selection on a mobile application, a selection of an advertisement action, or a navigation selection to a network data packet destination.

36. The method of claim 26, further comprising:

remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a first mobile browser application; and

remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a second mobile browser application.

37. At least one processor for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

a module for remotely monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

a module for remotely monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

a module for receiving user interaction data to a network and inferring a user behavioral profile;

a module for selecting an advertisement based on the user behavioral profile formatted for the mobile communication device; and

a module for transmitting the selected advertisement for being presented on the mobile communication device.

38. A computer program product for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

a computer-readable medium, comprising;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to remotely monitor user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to remotely monitor user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to receive user interaction data to a network and inferring a user behavioral profile;

at least one instruction for causing a computer to select an advertisement based on the user behavioral profile formatted for the mobile communication device; and

at least one instruction for causing a computer to transmit the selected advertisement for being presented on the mobile communication device.

39. An apparatus for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

means for remotely monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of a mobile communication device;

means for remotely monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

means for receiving user interaction data to a network and inferring a user behavioral profile;

means for selecting an advertisement based on the user behavioral profile formatted for the mobile communication device; and

means for transmitting the selected advertisement for being presented on the mobile communication device.

40. An apparatus for presenting advertisement content on a mobile communication device, comprising:

a network communication component in communication with a mobile communication device;

a remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with a first communication function of the mobile communication device, and for remotely monitoring user interaction with a second communication function of the mobile communication device that is separate in execution from the first communication function;

a behavior profiling component for receiving user interaction data and inferring a user behavioral profile; and

an advertisement distribution component for selecting an advertisement based on the user behavioral profile formatted for the mobile communication device and for transmitting the selected advertisement for being presented on the mobile communication device.

41. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a publicly switched telephone network destination.

42. The apparatus of claim 41, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

43. The apparatus of claim 41, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

44. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a wireless data packet protocol destination.

45. The apparatus of claim 44, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

46. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device that communicates with a mobile communication network operator to download executable content.

47. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the advertisement distribution component for directing the mobile communication device to present the advertisement in accordance with frequency and time goals associated with the advertisement.

48. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the remote usage monitor for inferring a refinement to a user behavioral profile by remotely monitoring user interaction with the presented advertisement.

49. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction selected as more than one of an initiated telephone call, a keyword search on mobile browser, a media content selection on a mobile application, a selection of an advertisement action, or a navigation selection to a network data packet destination.

50. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising the remote usage monitor for remotely monitoring user interaction with the first communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a first mobile browser application and for remotely monitoring user interaction with the second communication function of the mobile communication device of a keyword search on a second mobile browser application.
