Abstract

Disclosed are systems, hybrid compute environments, methods and computer-readable media for dynamically provisioning nodes for a workload. In the hybrid compute environment, each node communicates with a first resource manager associated with the first operating system and a second resource manager associated with a second operating system. The method includes receiving an instruction to provision at least one node in the hybrid compute environment from the first operating system to the second operating system, after provisioning the second operating system, pooling at least one signal from the resource manager associated with the at least one node, processing at least one signal from the second resource manager associated with the at least one node and consuming resources associated with the at least one node having the second operating system provisioned thereon.

Claims

1. A method of managing workload in a hybrid multi-node compute environment wherein at least one node has a first operating system controlled by a first resource manager and at least one node has a second operating system controlled by a second resource manager, the method comprising:

establishing a policy of balancing nodes in the compute environment between the first operating system and the second operating system;

periodically analyzing the compute environment to determine how well it is aligned with the established policy; and

based on the analysis, provisioning nodes in the compute environment to change at least one node from the first operating system to the second operating system or at least one node from the second operating system to the first operating system according to the established policy.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the analysis is based on at least one of historical use, current activity, pending workload and anticipated requirements.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein provisioning occurs by a workload manager issuing a system job that provisions the at least one node in compliance with a provisioning policy.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the provisioning policy causes the system job to provision the at least one node in between scheduled compute jobs.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the provisioning is performed using virtualization, discfull provisioning, disc-less provisioning or dual-booting.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising loading a user software stack onto the provisional nodes.

7. In a hybrid compute environment having a plurality of nodes wherein each node communicates with a first resource manager associated with a first operating system and a second resource manager associated with a second operating system, a method of dynamically provisioning a node for workload, the method comprising:

receiving an instruction from a workload manager to provision at least one node in a hybrid compute environment from the first operating system to the second operating system;

after provisioning the second operating system, pooling at least one signal from the first resource manager associated with the at least one node;

processing at least one signal from the second resource manager associated with the at least one node; and

consuming resources associated with the at least one node having the second operating system provisioned thereon.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the workload manager receives and pools in a latency pool the at least one signal from the first resource manager associated with the at least one node.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the workload manager processes the at least one signal from the second resource manager to manage the consumption of resources on the at least one node having the second operating system provisioned thereon.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the second operating system is a Microsoft operating system.

11. The method of claim 7, further comprising remapping attributes and retaining accounting statistics from the first operating system to the second operating system.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising translation, conflict mitigation and conflict management associated with different information from the first resource manager and the second resource manager.

13. The method of claim 7, wherein a manager manages workload in the hybrid compute environment using a single cohesive resource space, a single cohesive policy space, a single cohesive accounting space and a single management space.

14. A computer-readable media storing instructions for controlling a computing device to manage workload in a hybrid multi-node compute environment wherein at least one node has a first operating system controlled by a first resource manager and at least one node has a second operating system controlled by a second resource manager, the instructions comprising:

establishing a policy of balancing nodes in the compute environment between the first operating system and the second operating system;

periodically analyzing the compute environment to determine how well it is aligned with the established policy; and

based on the analysis, provisioning nodes in the compute environment to change at least one node from the first operating system to the second operating system or at least one node from the second operating system to the first operating system according to the established policy.

15. The computer-readable media of claim 14, wherein the analysis is based on at least one of historical use, current activity, pending workload and anticipated requirements.

16. The computer-readable media of claim 14, wherein provisioning occurs by a workload manager issuing a system job that provisions the at least one node in compliance with a provisioning policy.

17. The computer-readable media of claim 16, wherein the provisioning policy causes the system job to provision the at least one node in between scheduled compute jobs.

18. A computer-readable medium storing instructions for controlling a computing device to managing hybrid compute environment having a plurality of nodes wherein each node communicates with a first resource manager associated with a first operating system and a second resource manager associated with a second operating system, the instructions relating to dynamically provisioning a node for workload, the instructions comprising:

receiving an instruction from a workload manager to provision at least one node in a hybrid compute environment from the first operating system to the second operating system;

after provisioning the second operating system, pooling at least one signal from the first resource manager associated with the at least one node;

processing at least one signal from the second resource manager associated with the at least one node; and

consuming resources associated with the at least one node having the second operating system provisioned thereon.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the workload manager receives and pools in a latency pool the at least one signal from the first resource manager associated with the at least one node.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the workload manager processes the at least one signal from the second resource manager to manage the consumption of resources on the at least one node having the second operating system provisioned thereon.
