Abstract

A product placement engine and method for automatically identifying products for association with a document, the engine including a parser, an analysis module adapted to determine word scores and to adjust the word scores of the words by predetermined weightings, a keyword constructor module adapted to construct a keyword query search string using words having the highest word scores, a search engine adapted to search a products database having product records to identify products satisfying the keyword query search string and assign product scores, and a post processing module adapted to identify word matches in each of the product records and the document and update the product score.

Claims

1. A method for selecting at least one product for association with a document for display in a user interface rendered by a computing device comprising:

analyzing at least a portion of the document with an analyzer computing device, the analysis including at least a frequency of words in the document;

constructing a keyword query search string with a keyword constructor computing device, the keyword string at least partially based on words of the document having highest frequencies;

searching product records in a products database with a computer search engine to identify products satisfying the constructed keyword query search string; and

selecting at least one product from the identified products with a post processing computing device for display in the user interface.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said constructing step includes constructing a keyword search of said words of the document having the highest frequencies.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said analyzing step includes determining use of the words in the document.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the document is a web page.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the user interface is a web page graphically rendered by a browser.

6. The method of claim 1, further including parsing the product records to identify word matches in each of the product records and the document.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein said parsing step includes identifying the corresponding constituent part of each word of said parsed document including at least one of title, sub-titles, main body, headings, meta-tagged keywords, and meta-tagged description.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein said parsing step includes obtaining information indicating formatting characteristics of said words of the document including at least one of bolding, italicizing, underlining, capitalization, font type and font size.

9. The method of claim 1, further including retrieving product records for said identified products satisfying the keyword query search string.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said product records include at least one of a manufacturer'"'"'s page, a user manual, a marketing document, a merchant'"'"'s page, a review, sales data, and popularity data.

11. The method of claim 1, further including associating said selected product with the document.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein said selected product is displayed in the user interface.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein said selected product is displayed with a link to a page of at least one shopping service.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said selected product is displayed with links to pages of a plurality of shopping services.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein said selected product is displayed in the user interface as an advertisement.

16. A product placement system for selecting at least one product for display in a user interface rendered by a computing device, the system comprising:

an analyzer computing device adapted to analyze at least a portion of a document for at least a frequency of words in the document;

a keyword constructor computing device adapted to construct a keyword query search string at least partially based on the words of the document having highest frequencies;

a computer search engine adapted to search product records in a products database to identify products satisfying the constructed keyword query search string; and

a post processing computing device adapted to select at least one product from the identified products for display in the user interface.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein said keyword query search string includes said words of the document having the highest frequencies.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the analyzer computing device is further adapted to determine use of the words in the document.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the document is a web page.

20. The system of claim 16, wherein the user interface is a web page graphically rendered by a browser.

21. The system of claim 16, further including a parser adapted to parse the product records to identify word matches in each of the product records and the document.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein said parser identifies the corresponding constituent part of each word of said parsed document including at least one of title, sub-titles, main body, headings, meta-tagged keywords, and meta-tagged description.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein said parser obtains information indicating formatting characteristics of said words of the document including at least one of bolding, italicizing, underlining, capitalization, font type and font size.

24. The system of claim 16, wherein said search engine retrieves product records for said identified products satisfying the keyword query search string.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein said product records include at least one of a manufacturer'"'"'s page, a user manual, a marketing document, a merchant'"'"'s page, a review, sales data, and popularity data.

26. The system of claim 16, wherein said post processing computing device associates said selected product with the document.

27. The system of claim 16, further including a display device adapted to display said selected product in the user interface.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein said display device displays said selected product with a link to a page of at least one shopping service.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein said display device displays said selected product with links to pages of a plurality of shopping services.

30. The system of claim 27, wherein said display device displays said selected product in the user interface as an advertisement.
