Abstract

A license consignment method and system for a portable device playing a right-protected content with a license is provided for improving utilization reliability and manageability of a license by enabling a license server to manage the license consigned by the portable device. The method includes selecting a license to be consigned to a license server, transmitting the license server license information corresponding to the selected license, and transmitting, when the license is not downloaded in a certain time, a download trigger message to the portable device.

Claims

1. A license consignment service method for a portable device comprising at least one license for permitting consumption of protected contents, the method comprising:

selecting a license to be consigned to a license server;

transmitting the license server license information corresponding to the selected license; and

transmitting, when the license is not downloaded in a certain time, a download trigger message from the license server to the portable device.

2. The license consignment service method of claim 1, wherein the license information comprises consignment conditions comprising at least one of a consignment period and a notification policy.

3. The license consignment service method of claim 2, further comprising determining new consignment conditions when at least one of the license information comprises no consignment conditions and the consignment conditions do not comply with a consignment policy of the license server.

4. The license consignment service method of claim 3, further comprising transmitting a consignment condition notification message indicating the new consignment conditions from the license server to the portable device.

5. The license consignment service method of claim 4, further comprising outputting, at the portable device, a notification message informing of new consignment conditions.

6. The license consignment service method of claim 1, further comprising, when the license server does not support the license consignment service, transmitting a consignment rejection message from the license server to the portable device for informing the portable device that the license server does not support the license consignment.

7. A license consignment service method for a portable device comprising at least one license for consuming protected contents, the method comprising:

transmitting a license consignment request message comprising a field set with consignment conditions comprising a consignment period from the portable device to a license server;

transmitting a response message from the license server to the portable device in response to the license consignment request message;

transmitting a download trigger message from the license server to a designated device before the consignment period expires; and

transmitting, when the license server does not receive a reply from the designated device, the download trigger message to the portable device.

8. The license consignment service method of claim 7, further comprising:

determining whether the license server supports the license consignment service; and

transmitting, when the license server does not supports the license consignment service, a response message in which the field for the consignment conditions is removed from the license server to the portable device.

9. The license consignment service method of claim 8, further comprising displaying, when the portable device receives the response message, a popup message informing that the license server does not support the license consignment.

10. The license consignment service method of claim 9, further comprising:

determining, when at least one of the consignment conditions do not comprise the consignment period and the consignment period does not comply with a consignment policy of the license server, a new consignment period; and

transmitting the response message in which the field for the consignment conditions is set with a new consignment period, from the license server to the portable device.

The license consignment service method of claim 10, further comprising outputting, when the portable device receives the response message in which the field for the consignment conditions is set with the new consignment period, a notification message informing of the new consignment conditions.

12. The license consignment service method of claim 8, wherein the transmitting of the download trigger message from the license server to the designated device comprises repeating transmission of the download trigger message a certain number of times at a certain interval while determining whether a response message is received from the designated device.

13. A license consignment system comprising:

a portable device comprising at least one license for permitting consumption of protected contents and for transmitting license information for consignment of the license; and

a license server for preserving the license information transmitted by the portable device and for transmitting to a designated device a download trigger message for soliciting the designated device to download the license.

14. The license consignment system of claim 13, wherein the designated device may comprise at least one of the portable device that consigned the license to the license server and another portable device.

15. The license consignment system of claim 14, wherein the license server transmits the download trigger message a certain number of times at a certain interval while determining whether a response message is received from the designated device and transmits, when no response is received, the download trigger message to the portable device.

16. The license consignment system of claim 13, wherein the license information comprises consignment conditions comprising at least one of a consignment period and a notification policy.

17. The license consignment system of claim 16, wherein the license server determines, when at least one of the license information comprises no consignment conditions and the consignment conditions do not comply with a consignment policy of the license server, new consignment conditions.

18. The license consignment system of claim 17, wherein the server transmits a consignment condition notification message indicating the new consignment conditions to the portable device.

19. The license consignment system of claim 18, wherein the portable device outputs a notification message informing of the new consignment conditions.

20. The license consignment system of claim 13, wherein the server transmits, when the license consignment service is not supported, a consignment rejection message to the portable device for informing the portable device that the license server does not support the license consignment.
