Abstract

A computer receives a user request to replace a first text string with a second text string in a first document and a second document, respectively, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first content type and the first text string in the second document has a second content type that is different from the first content type. The computer substitutes the second text string for the first text string in the first document and the second document, wherein the replacing second text string in the first document has the first content type and the replacing second text string in the second document has the second content type.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving a search request that includes one or more user-specified search keywords;

identifying a first document and a second document, each document having at least one chunk that satisfies the search keywords, wherein a first text string in the first document has a first content type and the first text string in the second document has a second content type that is different from the first content type;

receiving a user request to replace the first text string with a second text string; and

substituting the second text string for the first text string in the first document and the second document, wherein the replacing second text string in the first document has the first content type and the replacing second text string in the second document has the second content type.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

after identifying the first document and the second document,

displaying a first chunk from the first document and a second chunk from the second document, each chunk including at least one instance of the first text string, wherein the instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in a text-only display format; and

after substituting the second text string for the first text string,

replacing the displayed instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks with respective instances of the second text string, wherein the instances of the replacing second text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in the text-only display format.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first document has a first document type and the second document has a second document type that is different from the first document type.

The method of claim 1, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first appearance when the first document is rendered by its native application and the first text string in the second document has a second appearance that is different from the first appearance when the second document is rendered by its native application.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first document includes an original second text string that has a content type different from the replacing second text string.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein, when the first document is rendered by its native application, the original second text string and the replacing second text string have different appearances.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the user request stipulates that the first text string at one or more user-specified locations in the first document and the second document be replaced by the second text string, further comprising:

substituting the second text string for the first text string at the user-specified locations in the first document and the second document, respectively.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the user-specified locations include one or more selected from the group consisting of title, paragraph, table, header, footer, slide, spreadsheet, and all.

9. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving a user request to replace a first text string with a second text string in a first document and a second document, respectively, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first content type and the first text string in the second document has a second content type that is different from the first content type; and

substituting the second text string for the first text string in the first document and the second document, wherein the replacing second text string in the first document has the first content type and the replacing second text string in the second document has the second content type.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the user request stipulates that the first text string at user-specified locations in the first document and the second document be replaced by the second text string.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the user-specified locations include one or more selected from the group consisting of title, paragraph, table, header, footer, slide, spreadsheet, and all.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

substituting the second text string for the first text string at the user-specified locations in the first document and the second document, respectively.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the first document and the second document are identified in response to a search request for the first text string within a set of documents.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

after identifying the first document and the second document,

displaying a first chunk from the first document and a second chunk from the second document, each chunk including at least one instance of the first text string, wherein the instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in a text-only display format; and

after substituting the second text string for the first text string,

replacing the displayed instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks with respective instances of the second text string, wherein the instances of the replacing second text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in the text-only display format.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the first document has a first document type and the second document has a second document type that is different from the first document type.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first appearance when the first document is rendered by its native application and the first text string in the second document has a second appearance that is different from the first appearance when the second document is rendered by its native application.

17. The method of claim 9, wherein the first document includes an original second text string that has a content type different from the replacing second text string.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the original second text string and the replacing second text string have different appearances when the first document is rendered by its native application.

19. A computer system, comprising:

memory;

one or more processors;

one or more programs stored in the memory and configured for execution by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including;

instructions for receiving a user request to replace a first text string with a second text string in a first document and a second document, respectively, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first content type and the first text string in the second document has a second content type that is different from the first content type; and

instructions for substituting the second text string for the first text string in the first document and the second document, wherein the replacing second text string in the first document has the first content type and the replacing second text string in the second document has the second content type.

20. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the user request stipulates that the first text string at user-specified locations in the first document and the second document be replaced by the second text string.

21. The computer system of claim 20, wherein the user-specified locations include one or more selected from the group consisting of title, paragraph, table, header, footer, slide, spreadsheet, and all.

22. The computer system of claim 20, further comprising:

instructions for substituting the second text string for the first text string at the user-specified locations in the first document and the second document, respectively.

23. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the first document and the second document are identified in response to a search request for the first text string within a set of documents.

24. The computer system of claim 23, further comprising:

instructions for displaying a first chunk from the first document and a second chunk from the second document, each chunk including at least one instance of the first text string, wherein the instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in a text-only display format; and

instructions for replacing the displayed instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks with respective instances of the second text string, wherein the instances of the replacing second text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in the text-only display format.

25. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the first document has a first document type and the second document has a second document type that is different from the first document type.

26. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first appearance when the first document is rendered by its native application and the first text string in the second document has a second appearance that is different from the first appearance when the second document is rendered by its native application.

27. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the first document includes an original second text string that has a content type different from the replacing second text string.

28. The computer system of claim 27, wherein the original second text string and the replacing second text string have different appearances when the first document is rendered by its native application.

29. A computer readable storage medium having stored therein instructions, which when executed by a computer system cause the computer system to:

receive a user request to replace a first text string with a second text string in a first document and a second document, respectively, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first content type and the first text string in the second document has a second content type that is different from the first content type; and

substitute the second text string for the first text string in the first document and the second document, wherein the replacing second text string in the first document has the first content type and the replacing second text string in the second document has the second content type.

30. The computer readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the user request stipulates that the first text string at user-specified locations in the first document and the second document be replaced by the second text string.

31. The computer readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the user-specified locations include one or more selected from the group consisting of title, paragraph, table, header, footer, slide, spreadsheet, and all.

32. The computer readable storage medium of claim 30, further comprising:

instructions for substituting the second text string for the first text string at the user-specified locations in the first document and the second document, respectively.

33. The computer readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the first document and the second document are identified in response to a search request for the first text string within a set of documents.

34. The computer readable storage medium of claim 33, further comprising:

instructions for displaying a first chunk from the first document and a second chunk from the second document, each chunk including at least one instance of the first text string, wherein the instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in a text-only display format; and

instructions for replacing the displayed instances of the first text string within the first and second chunks with respective instances of the second text string, wherein the instances of the replacing second text string within the first and second chunks are displayed in the text-only display format.

35. The computer readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the first document has a first document type and the second document has a second document type that is different from the first document type.

36. The computer readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the first text string in the first document has a first appearance when the first document is rendered by its native application and the first text string in the second document has a second appearance that is different from the first appearance when the second document is rendered by its native application.

37. The computer readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the first document includes an original second text string that has a content type different from the replacing second text string.

38. The computer readable storage medium of claim 37, wherein the original second text string and the replacing second text string have different appearances when the first document is rendered by its native application.
