Abstract

Service resource items for use in call setup in a telephone system are held on servers that are connected to a computer network which is logically distinct from the telephone system infrastructure; this computer network may, for example, make use of the Internet. Each service item is locatable on the network at a corresponding URI and is associated with a particular telephone number. A mapping is provided between telephone numbers and the URIs of associated service resource items. When it is desired to access a service resource item associated with a particular telephone number, this mapping is used to retrieve the corresponding URI which is then used to access the desired service resource item.

17. A method, comprising:

determining an indicator from a data resource using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP); and

responsive to determining the indicator, a computer requesting a communication to be set up through a switched telecommunication system to a destination associated with the indicator.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising setting up the communication through the switched telecommunication system.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the communication comprises a call.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the data resource is a page of the World Wide Web on the Internet.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein requesting comprises sending a request to an apparatus of the switched telecommunication system using Internet Protocol (IP).

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the apparatus comprises a service control point (SCP).

23. The method of claim 17, wherein the switched telecommunication system comprises a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

24. The method of claim 17, wherein the switched telecommunication system comprises a public land mobile network (PLMN).

25. The method of claim 17, wherein determining is performed by a system that comprises an HTTP server.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein determining is performed by a system that comprises a domain name system (DNS) type database system.

27. The method of claim 17, wherein the computer is part of the switched telecommunication system.

28. The method of claim 17, wherein the indicator comprises a telephone number.

29. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one computer configured to;

determine an indicator from a data resource using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP); and

responsive to determining the indicator, request that a call be set up through a switched telecommunication system to a destination associated with the indicator.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the at least one computer comprises an HTTP server.

31. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the at least one computer comprises a processor configured control the determining and the requesting.

32. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the data resource is a page of the World Wide Web on the Internet.

33. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the at least one computer is configured to request the call set up by sending a request to the switched telecommunication system using Internet Protocol (IP).

34. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the switched telecommunication system comprises a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

35. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the switched telecommunication system comprises a public land mobile network (PLMN).

36. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the at least one computer is part of the switched telecommunication system.

37. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the indicator comprises a telephone number.

38. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for performing a method, the method comprising:

determining an indicator from a data resource using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP); and

responsive to determining the indicator, requesting that a call be set up through a switched telecommunication system to a destination associated with the indicator.

39. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein the data resource is a page of the World Wide Web on the Internet.

40. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein requesting comprises sending a request to an apparatus of the switched telecommunication system using Internet Protocol (IP).

41. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein the apparatus comprises a service control point (SCP).

42. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein the switched telecommunication system comprises a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

43. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein the switched telecommunication system comprises a public land mobile network (PLMN).

44. The computer-readable medium of claim 38, wherein the indicator comprises a telephone number.
