Abstract

The invention relates to sensor compositions comprising a composite array of individual arrays, to allow for simultaneous processing of a number of samples. The invention further provides methods of making and using the composite arrays. The invention further provides a hybridization chamber for use with a composite array.

Claims

1. A method of manufacturing an array of arrays, said method comprising:

(a) providing a substrate having projections extending therefrom, said projections having an end adapted for the attachment of an array;

(b) providing a plurality of solid supports, wherein each solid support comprises a surface, said surface having an array of bioactive agents attached thereto; and

(c) attaching said solid supports to the end of the projections, thereby forming an array component comprising a plurality of arrays configured to be dipped into the wells of a multiwell plate.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said bioactive agents are attached to said surface at discrete sites.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said array of bioactive agents comprises different bioactive agents.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said array of bioactive agents comprises at least 1000 different bioactive agents per square centimeter.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said bioactive agents comprise nucleic acids.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the step of providing said plurality of solid supports further comprises attaching said nucleic acids to said surface of said solid support using a spotting, printing or photolithographic technique.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein said nucleic acids are attached to said surface in an ordered arrangement.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said surface of said solid support is planar.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein said solid support is glass.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein said substrate comprises a molded substrate.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein said substrate comprises fiber optic bundles.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein said substrate is not a fiber optic array.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein said solid support comprises silicon or modified silicon.

14. A method of manufacturing an array of arrays, said method comprising:

(a) providing a substrate having projections extending therefrom, said projections having an end comprising a surface; and

(b) modifying the end of said projections so as to form an array of bioactive agents attached to the surface, thereby forming an array component comprising a plurality of arrays configured to be dipped into wells of a multiwell plate.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said bioactive agents are attached to said surface at discrete sites.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein said array of bioactive agents comprises different bioactive agents.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said array of bioactive agents comprises at least 1000 different bioactive agents per square centimeter.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein said bioactive agents comprise nucleic acids.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the step of modifying said end of said projections comprises attaching said nucleic acids to said surface using a spotting, printing or photolithographic technique.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein said nucleic acids are attached to said surface in an ordered arrangement.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein said surface is planar.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein said substrate comprises a molded substrate.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein said substrate comprises fiber optic bundles.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein said substrate is not a fiber optic array.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein said solid support comprises silicon or modified silicon.

26. A method of manufacturing an array of arrays, said method comprising:

(a) providing a plurality of projections each projection having an end adapted for the attachment of an array, wherein said plurality of projections can be configured to project from a substrate;

(b) providing an array of nucleic acids at the end of each projection; and

(c) configuring the plurality of projections to project from the substrate, thereby forming an array component having a configuration that permits the plurality of projections to be dipped into the wells of a multiwell plate.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of providing said array of nucleic acids comprises distributing nucleic acids at end of each projection, thereby producing an array of nucleic acids attached to said end of each projection.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of providing said array of nucleic acids comprises attaching a solid support to said end of each projection, said solid support having an array of nucleic acids distributed thereon.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein said solid support comprises silicon or modified silicon.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein said solid support is glass.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein said surface of said solid support is planar.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein said nucleic acids are present at discrete sites.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein said array of nucleic acids comprises different nucleic acids.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein each array comprises at least 1000 different bioactive agents per square centimeter.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the nucleic acids are attached to said surface in an ordered arrangement.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein said array is made by a spotting, printing or photolithographic technique.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein said projections are made of a material that resists the transmission of light.

38. The method of claim 26, wherein said projections comprises fiber optic bundles.

39. The method of claim 26, wherein said projections lack fiber optic bundles.

40. A method of manufacturing an array of arrays, said method comprising:

providing a base plate;

providing an array component, said array component comprising a plurality of projections each projection having an end, said projections being configured to be dipped into the wells of a multiwell plate;

providing an array of bioactive agents at the end of each projection; and

attaching said array component to the base plate.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein said array component is attached to said base plate prior to providing said array of bioactive agents at said end of each projection.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein said array component is attached to said base plate subsequent to providing said array of bioactive agents at said end of each projection.

43. The method of claim 40, wherein said bioactive agents are present at discrete sites.

44. The method of claim 40, wherein said array of bioactive agents comprises different bioactive agents.

45. The method of claim 40, wherein said projections are made of a material that resists the transmission of light.

46. The method of claim 40, wherein said base plate is a holder comprising at least one depression into which said array component is inserted.

47. The method of claim 40, wherein said base plate comprises a plate to which said array component is attached.

48. The method of claim 40, further comprising providing a lid, thereby covering said arrays.

49. The method of claim 48, wherein said base plate and said lid each further comprises one or more alignment moieties.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein said one or more alignment moieties on said base plate are female fittings and said one or more alignment moieties on said lid are male fittings.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein said one or more female fittings are holes and said one or more male fittings are pins.

52. The method of claim 51 further comprising inserting said one or more pins into said one or more holes.

53. The method of claim 52, wherein said array is made by a spotting, printing or photolithographic technique.

54. The method of claim 53, wherein said bioactive agents comprise nucleic acids.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein each array comprises at least 1000 different bioactive agents per square centimeter.

56. The method of claim 55 further comprising securing said lid to said base plate.

57. The method of claim 56, wherein said nucleic acids are attached to a surface of a glass substrate.

58. The method of claim 57, wherein said surface is planar.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein the nucleic acids are attached to planar surface in an ordered arrangement.

60. The method of claim 59, wherein said projections are made of a material that resists the transmission of light.
