Abstract

In a new Notification Service, applications can publish data and allow users to subscribe to that data how they wish, with methods for secure redaction and secure authentication.

Claims

1. A computer based notification service comprising:

code to receive events from applications indicating changes of objects at the applications;

code to interpret the events to determine which users should be sent notifications concerning which events;

code to send a notification to at least one of the users according to a format selected by the at least one of the users, the format selected from a set including email and RSS;

wherein the notification service constructs a redacted RSS feed for a user by checking with the application to determine the authority of the user to receive information about the objects.

2. The computer based notification service of claim 1,

wherein the at least one user selects to receive the notification in a summary email.

3. The computer based notification service of claim 2,

wherein the at least one user selects the period of the summary email.

4. The computer based notification service of claim 1,

wherein the RSS notifications have user security.

5. The computer based notification service of claim 4,

wherein the RSS notifications use basic authentication with user name and password.

6. The computer based notification service of claim 4,

wherein the RSS notifications use tokens in a single sign on system.

7. The computer based notification service of claim 1,

wherein the notification service provides an API to receive from the applications an association between users, objects, and the type of notification.

8. The computer based notification service of claim 1,

further comprising an associated database.

9. The computer based notification service of claim 1,

wherein an RSS feed has an URL for changes to an object.

10. The computer based notification service of claim 1,

wherein an individualized user has a personal RSS feed giving all of the individual users notifications.

11. The computer based notification service comprising:

code to receive events from applications indicating changes of objects at the applications;

code to interpret the events to determine which users should be sent notifications concerning which events;

code to send an RSS feed to at least one of the users, the RSS feed including indications of the changes, the notification service using authentication before providing the RSS feed, the authentication including checking for a single sign-on token and if one is not provided, requesting a user name and password.

12. The computer based notification service of claim 11,

wherein the notification service provides an API to receive from the applications an association between users objects and the type of notification.

13. The computer based notification service of claim 11,

further comprising an associated database.

14. The computer based notification service of claim 11,

wherein an RSS feed has an URL for changes to an object.

15. The computer based notification service of claim 11,

wherein an individualized user has a personal RSS feed providing all of the individual user'"'"'s notifications.

16. The computer based notification service comprising:

code to receive events from applications indicating changes of objects at the applications;

code to interpret the events to determine which users should be sent notifications concerning which events;

wherein the notification service constructs a redacted RSS feed by checking with the application to determine the authority of the at least one of the user'"'"'s to receive information about the object.

wherein the notification service provides an API to receive from the applications an association between users objects and the type of notification.

21. A computer based notification service comprising:

a component to receive from applications indications of a subscription indicating a users and objects;

a component to receive events associated with objects from the application;

a component to check after an event is received for the authentication of a user concerning the object associated with the event; and

a component to create a notification when there is authorized update information.

22. The computer based notification service of claim 21,

wherein the notification is a summary email.

23. The computer based notification service of claim 22,

wherein a user can select the period of the summary email.

24. The computer based notification service of claim 21,

wherein RSS notifications are used.

25. The computer based notification service of claim 24,

wherein the RSS notifications use security.
