Abstract

A waste management system includes a waste transport device and a waste collection device. The waste transport device includes a collection member with a distal end opening having a first cross-sectional area and a proximal end opening having a second cross-sectional area less than the first cross-sectional area, a retention cuff disposed about an outer surface of the collection member, a first section having a lumen in fluid communication with a lumen of the collection member, and a second section having a distal end connected to a proximal end of the first section, the second section including a flush lumen disposed along a length thereof.

Claims

1. A waste management system, comprising:

a waste transport device, including;

a collection member with a distal end opening having a first cross-sectional area and a proximal end opening having a second cross-sectional area less than the first cross-sectional area;

a retention cuff disposed about an outer surface of the collection member; and

a first section having a lumen in fluid communication with a lumen of the collection member;

a second section having a distal end connected to a proximal end of the first section, the second section including a flush lumen disposed along a length thereof; and

a waste collection device.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the flush lumen comprises a plurality of spaced apart apertures along a length thereof.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the second section includes one or more stiffening structures disposed along a length thereof.

4. The system according to claim 1, wherein the waste collection device includes a strap with a fixed end and a free end, the free end including a Velcro strip selectively attachable to a corresponding receiving strip adjacent the fixed end.

5. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a first connector coupled to a proximal end of the second section and a second connector coupled to the waste collection device.

6. The system according to claim 5, wherein the second connector includes a slot configured to receive a flange of the first connector.

7. The system according to claim 5, wherein at least one of the first and second connectors includes a valve that opens upon engagement of the first connector with the second connector.

8. The system according to claim 5, wherein one of the second section and first connector includes a valve that opens upon engagement of the first connector with the second connector.

9. The system according to claim 8, wherein the valve is a ball valve, the first connector configured to rotate and open the ball valve upon engagement with the second connector.

10. The system according to claim 8, wherein the valve is a duckbill valve, the second connector including a concentric tube with an angled face positioned to open the duckbill valve upon engagement with the second connector.

11. The system according to claim 8, wherein the valve is a twisted tube, the tube untwisted following engagement of the first and second connectors by rotating an end of the first connector.

The system according to claim 5, wherein the first connector includes a first locking arm, a second locking arm, and a first sliding frame held between the first and second locking arms, the first sliding frame including a first aperture, and wherein the second connector includes a second sliding frame with a recessed portion shaped to receive the first sliding frame, the second sliding frame including a second aperture approximately the same size and shape as the first aperture.

13. The system according to claim 12, wherein the second sliding frame is disposed in a fixed frame attached to the waste collection device.

14. The system according to claim 13, wherein the fixed frame includes a curved section extending away from a longitudinal axis of the fixed frame, the curved section providing a means for hanging on a structure.

15. The system according to claim 13, wherein the fixed frame includes first and second slots to respectively receive a portion of the first and second locking arms.

The system according to claim 15, wherein the second sliding frame includes a gripping tab positioned above the recessed portion, wherein movement of the gripping tab in an upward direction following receipt of the first sliding frame in the second sliding frame, and receipt of a portion of the first and second locking arms respectively into the first and second slots, places the waste collection device in fluid communication with the waste transport device.

The system according to claim 5, wherein the first connector includes a first frame including a sliding disk, wherein the disk covers an opening in a proximal end of the second section when the first connector is unattached to the second connector, the disk slidable along the first frame when the first connector is attached to the second connector to place the waste collection device in fluid communication with the waste transport device.

18. The system according to claim 17, wherein the disk includes projections shaped for receipt in spaced apart recesses along the first frame to provide a plurality of temporary locking positions for the disk.

19. A method of connecting a waste transport device to a waste collection device, comprising:

associating a first connector coupled to the waste transport device with a second connector coupled to the waste collection device by aligning an aperture of the first connector with an aperture of the second connector and pressing an end of one or more locking arms of the first connector into slots of the second connector; and

sliding the first and second connectors to align the apertures with a central lumen of the waste transport device and an opening of the waste collection device.

20. A method of managing the fecal material of a patient, comprising:

inserting a distal section of a waste transport system in a collapsed configuration into a patient'"'"'s rectum, the distal section in an expanded configuration defining a distal end opening having a first cross-sectional area and a proximal end opening having a second cross-sectional area less than the first cross-sectional area, the distal section including an inflatable retention cuff;

inflating the retention cuff to a first inflated configuration; and

flushing a central lumen of the waste transport system by infusing flushing fluid through a flush lumen disposed along a longitudinal axis of the waste transport system.
