Abstract

A method and an apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention includes a controller to process a criterion for selecting a point-of-interest (POI). The criterion can be based on historical trip data. Data related to a POI, including a community-of-interest rating, for example, can be accessed through a satellite and terrestrial mobile communication network. Multiple POIs can be graphically represented for user selection based on the criterion and/or other data. Once a POI is selected, data related to the selected POI, including navigation data, can be displayed. In another embodiment, the controller can access navigation data to a specified destination. The navigation data can be based on historical trip data such as route segments and destination areas. The navigation data can be accessed from an in-vehicle system or from a navigation service provider and can be displayed to assist a user in reaching the specified destination.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor operable to process a criterion for each of a plurality of points-of-interest based on historical trip data, the historical trip data includes route segment data and destination area data;

a display coupled to the processor, the display operable to graphically represent the plurality of points-of-interest based on the criterion; and

an input device coupled to the processor, the input device operable to detect a selection of one of the graphically represented plurality of points-of-interest.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to process data related to a previously conducted trip for generation of the historical trip data.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to process navigation data related to the selected point-of-interest for graphical representation.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a memory operable to store one or more of the following:

the historical trip data;

data related to a previously conducted trip; and

navigation data related to the selected point-of-interest.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a modem coupled to the processor, the modem operable to receive data related to the plurality of points-of-interest from a satellite and terrestrial mobile communication network.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to process the criterion for one the plurality of points-of-interest based on one or more of the following:

the portion of the route segment data related to travel to the one of the plurality of points-of-interest from a current location; and

the portion of the destination area data related to a location of the one of the plurality of points-of-interest.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to process the criterion for one the plurality of points-of-interest based on a rating provided by a community-of-interest.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to process a preferred point-of-interest based on the criterion for each of the plurality of points-of-interest.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the display is operable to graphically represent one or more of the following:

data related to a preferred point-of-interest;

data related to the plurality of points-of-interest in an order that is based on the criterion; and

data related to the selected point-of-interest.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is operable to communicate data related to the selected point-of-interest to the display for graphical representation, the data including one or more of the following:

a location on a navigation map;

a telephone number;

an address;

a website;

a hyperlink;

a multimedia feed;

an estimated travel time from a current location; and

an email address.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the input device includes a touch screen display.

12. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor operable to process navigation data to a destination for graphical representation in a display, the navigation data being based on historical trip data, the historical trip data includes route segment data and destination area data.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processor is operable to access the navigation data from a memory.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a memory for storage of one or more of the following:

the navigation data;

the historical trip data; and

data related to a previously conducted trip.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processor is operable to process data related to a previously conducted trip for generation of the historical trip data.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processor is operable to process the historical trip data for communication to a navigation service provider.

17. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a modem coupled to the processor, the modem operable to communicate the historical trip data to a navigation service provider through a satellite and terrestrial mobile communication network.

18. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a modem coupled to the processor, the modem operable to receive the navigation data from a navigation service provider through a satellite and terrestrial mobile communication network.

19. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a modem coupled to the processor and to a memory, the modem operable to communicate the navigation data to the memory for storage.

20. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the navigation data is based on one or more of the following:

the portion of the route segment data related to travel to the destination from a current location; and

the portion of the destination area data related to a location of the destination.

21. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processor is operable to process updated navigation data, the updated navigation data being based on one or more of the following:

the historical trip data;

traffic data; and

deviations from previously provided navigation data.

22. A method, comprising:

accessing data related to a plurality of points-of-interest;

determining a criterion for each of the plurality of points-of-interest based on the accessed data and historical trip data, the historical trip data including route segment data and destination area data; and

detecting a selection of one of the plurality of points-of-interest, the selection being based on the criterion.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising generating the historical trip data based on data related to a previously conducted trip.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising conveying the criterion for the plurality of points-of-interest in a graphical representation.

25. The method of claim 22, further comprising graphically representing data related to the detected selection, the data including one or more of the following:

a location on a navigation map;

a telephone number;

an address;

a website;

a hyperlink;

a multimedia feed;

an estimated travel time from a current location; and

an email address.

26. The method of claim 22, wherein the determining of the criterion for one of the plurality of points-of-interest is based on a first weighting factor for the route segment data and a second weighting factor for the destination area data.

27. The method of claim 22, wherein the determining of the criterion for one of the plurality of points-of-interest is based on a rating provided by a community-of-interest.

28. The method of claim 22, further comprising determining the criterion for one of the plurality of points-of-interest based on one or more of the following:

the portion of the route segment data related to travel to the one of the plurality of points-of-interest from a current location; and

the portion of the destination area data related to a location of the one of the plurality of points-of-interest.

29. The method of claim 22, further comprising determining criterion for one of the plurality of points-of-interest based on one or more of the following:

time to arrive to a location of the one of the plurality of points-of-interest from a current location; and

distance to travel from a current location to the location of the one of the plurality of points-of-interest.

30. A method, comprising:

accessing navigation data, the navigation data being based on historical trip data, the historical trip data including route segment data and destination area data; and

graphically representing the navigation data.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising accessing updated navigation data, the updated navigation data being based on one or more of the following:

historical trip data;

traffic data; and

deviations from previously provided navigation data.

32. The method of claim 30, further comprising storing the navigation data for a current trip.

33. The method of claim 30, further comprising receiving the navigation data from a navigation service provider through a satellite and terrestrial mobile communication network.

34. The method of claim 30, further comprising receiving updated navigation data from a navigation service provider through a satellite and terrestrial mobile communication network.

35. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor programmed to process a criterion for each of a plurality of points-of-interest based on historical trip data, the historical trip data includes route segment data and destination area data, the processor programmed to process the criterion for the plurality of points-of-interest for graphical representation, and the processor programmed to process a selection of one of the graphically represented plurality of points-of-interest.

36. A method, comprising:

accessing a criterion determined for each of a plurality of points-of-interest, the criterion being based on data related to the plurality of points-of-interest and historical trip data, the historical trip data including route segment data and destination area data; and

detecting a selection of one of the plurality of points-of-interest, the selection being based on the criterion.
