Abstract

A method and system for effectively administering anticoagulation therapy, including providing a warfarin dose weekly schedule and converting a total weekly requirement into daily dosages based on the number of milligrams in the pills selected for treatment. A default pill size can be selected as well as other customizable features. Medications can be recorded simultaneously and potential drug interactions are highlighted. Dates on which the patient should return to the clinic are automatically calculated for review. The patient is provided with a hardcopy of the visit as well as the recommended warfarin dose schedule. The user is provided with several customizable options for recording pertinent visit data.

40. A method for computing a periodic anticoagulation medication regimen for a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving current information for the patient;

soliciting additional treatment information from a medical professional; and

automatically calculating the periodic anticoagulation medication regimen based on the current patient information and the additional treatment information.

41. The method in accordance with claim 40, wherein the current patient information includes at least one of a patient'"'"'s current periodic anticoagulation medication dose, current international normalized ratio, and international normalized ratio goal.

42. The method in accordance with claim 41, wherein the new periodic dose medication regimen is based on at least one of the patient'"'"'s current periodic anticoagulation medication dose, current international normalized ratio, and international normalized ratio goal.

43. The method in accordance with claim 40, wherein the new periodic dose medication regimen is calculated based on an equation customizable by each user.

44. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising displaying standard medical guidelines in response to a user'"'"'s request.

45. The method in accordance with claim 44, wherein the standard medical guidelines are published by American College of Chest Physicians.

46. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising converting the new periodic dose medication into daily doses based on a number of milligrams in a single pill.

47. The method in accordance with claim 46, wherein said converting step further comprises receiving from a user over the network a setting of a predetermined number of milligrams in a single pill as defined by the user.

48. The method in accordance with claim 40, wherein the anticoagulation medication is low molecular weight heparin.

49. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising searching a database of patient records based on at least one of patient'"'"'s last name, patient'"'"'s first name, medical record number, social security number and patient identification.

50. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising displaying a list of patients that are overdue for a scheduled visit as of a current date.

51. The method in accordance with claim 50, wherein the scheduled visit is overdue if delayed more than a predetermined number of days, as defined by a user, relative to a current date.

52. The method in accordance with claim 40, wherein the current information includes updated medication information, the method further comprising automatically displaying medication interaction messages in response to receiving the updated medication information.

53. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising displaying a list of patients scheduled for a visit on a current date.

54. The method in accordance with claim 53, further comprising selecting a particular patient from the list of patients scheduled.

55. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising generating a report of at least one of patient, physician, and clinic summary information.

56. The method in accordance with claim 55, wherein said report is customizable as to which fields are to be included therein.

57. The method in accordance with claim 56, wherein said report is customizable in at least one of sorting and grouping of the fields included therein.

58. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising the steps of accessing the system via a web site;

and receiving a selection of preferences to customize configuration of the web site.

59. The method in accordance with claim 40, further comprising automatically calculating a scheduled return visit based on whether the new periodic dose medication regimen has changed relative to the current periodic anticoagulation medication dose.

76. The method according to claim 40, the additional treatment information including reason for anticoagulation administration, desired intensity of anticoagulation, and anticipated duration of anticoagulation therapy.

60. A system for administration of anticoagulation medication accessed via a computer terminal over a network, comprising:

a first module receiving current information for a patient and additional treatment information determined by a medical professional; and

a second module automatically calculating a new periodic dose medication regimen based on the received information.

61. The system in accordance with claim 60, wherein the current information received includes at least one of a patient'"'"'s current periodic anticoagulation medication dose, current international normalized ratio, and international normalized ratio goal.

62. The system in accordance with claim 61, wherein the new periodic dose medication regimen is based on at least one of the patient'"'"'s current periodic anticoagulation medication dose, current international normalize ratio, and international normalized ratio goal.

63. The system in accordance with claim 60, wherein the new periodic dose medication regimen is calculated based on an equation customizable by each user.

64. The system in accordance with claim 60, further comprising a module to convert the new periodic dose medication into daily doses based on a number of milligrams in a single pill.

65. The system in accordance with claim 64, wherein said converting module includes a module to receive from a user over the network a setting of a predetermined number of milligrams in a single pill as defined by the user.

66. The system in accordance with claim 60, wherein the anticoagulation medication is low molecular weight heparin.

67. The system in accordance with claim 60, further comprising a display module displaying a list of patients that are overdue for a scheduled visit as of a current date.

68. The system in accordance with claim 67, wherein the scheduled visit is overdue if delayed more than a predetermined number of days, as defined by a user, relative to a current date.

69. The system in accordance with claim 60, wherein the current information includes updated medication information, the system further including a display module automatically displaying medication interaction messages in response to receiving the updated medication information.

70. The system in accordance with claim 60, further including a display module displaying a list of patients scheduled for a visit on a current date.

71. The system in accordance with claim 60, further including a report generating module generating a report of at least one of patient, physician, and clinic summary information.

72. The system in accordance with claim 71, wherein said report is customizable as to which fields are to be included therein.

73. The system in accordance with claim 72, wherein said report is customizable in at least one of sorting and grouping of the fields included therein.

74. The system in accordance with claim 60, further including:

a first module accessing the system via a web site; and

a second module receiving a selection of preferences to customize configuration of the web site.

75. The system in accordance with claim 60, further including a calculation module automatically calculating a scheduled return visit based on whether the new periodic dose medication regimen has changed relative to the current periodic anticoagulation medication dose.

77. The system according to claim 60, the additional treatment information including reason for anticoagulation administration, desired intensity of anticoagulation, and anticipated duration of anticoagulation therapy.
